Question ID: 378925
Where can I go to find some photos of the Sept 11 attacks that are not
subject to Copyright restriction. This is for a Powerpoint
Presentation, and my company will want assurance that the images I use
are Public Domain. I am interested in the actual place to download the
info, but also your comments on the gray area. (No legal advice
requested) Thanks

I can give you a link to photos from government websites of the WTC attack.

As a rule of thumb, photos used on federal government sites are public
domain unless explicitly stated otherwise.

However, you would have to do your own sifting through the photos to
(a) find the ones that are of most interest to you and (b) satisfy
yourself that they are, in fact, in the public domain, by examining
the "use" pages that many government sites maintain.

Alternatively, if you can identify a particular photo of interest, I
can check on its public domain status for you, but at the price you
have offered, I couldn't justify doing this for more than one photo.

Let me know.

I think the links to the sites will be helpful. I may later repost to
determine the copyright status. Thanks!

Thanks for getting back to me.

Google Images allows you to search the internet for pictures that
match your search terms. The main search page is here:

http://images.google.com

I conducted a search on:

"world trade center" OR wtc site:gov

which returns over 1,000 images of (or related to) the World Trade
Center exclusively from websites that end in the .gov extension --
that is, from government websites.

Note that not all these sites are FEDERAL sites...I would suggest
looking for pictures only from sites belonging to federal government
agencies, as their rules pertaining to copyright are clearer than
state or local government sites.

In general, pictures on federal websites that are not identified as
originating from a non-government source, or are not indicated as
copyright-protected, should be in the public domain.

However, in the crush of events surrounding 9/11, I'm not certain all
sites followed their own quidelines for posting pictures. I would
advise some checking around before assuming a picture is public
domain.

I've always found this NASA picture particularly compelling:

http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/topstory/20020905wtc.html

and it is definitely in the public domain.

Let me know if you need additional help on a picture or two, and best
of luck with your presentation.
