Question ID: 378978
1. Public school choices: What options are there for a 7th grader
moving to Manhattan NY for school living at 60 East 96th Street? what
are the zoned public schools? (check out bestschools.net and the
department of education (doe) website)? what are the other public
schools that accept kids from beyond the schools zip code?

Details, and sub-questions:
(I am particularily interested in learning about Hunter or
Hunter-school (something by that name) on Park avenue (not hunter
college)(it is a middle school or high school) (I think it might be on
94th? but not sure, definately near park avenue or on park avenue).
I gave the address of the family so you could look up zip code at
USPS.com, I think it is 10128 (but could be 10028 or 10024. not sure
please verify with united states postal service usps.com.) The best
schools website (I think their address is www.bestschools.com or .net)
has a listing of public schools along with math and verbal scores.
anything above 85% is considered good to great. Anything below 80% is
considered not a great option if you have to go public and you should
then be trying to get your child into one of these "charter" schools
(which is a public school with a twist), or Public schools that
accepts kids from other neighborhoods (ie, other zip codes rather than
all the students being from the same zip code or codes which is the
way the majority of the new york public schools are zoned. These
"charter" or "other" public schools tend to have have better math and
verbal scores (above 80%) and unlike most public schools in New York,
(Manahattan) they accept kids from other zip codes.) In addition to
the "zoned" public schools available to someone living on 60 East 96th
street, new york, ny, what other public schools accept kids for 7th
grade? within manhattan? Are there exams? when and who can apply? I
know there is something that people refer to as Lab School. Which
based on my research is a public school (number 77)(I think, but not
sure, that this might be one of those "special" or "other" or
"charter" public schools that accepts kids from any zip code. (note,
all public schools in Manhattan have a number.) And everyone seems to
know that public elementary school number 6 is the highest rated
elementary school. (based on those math and verbal scores I mentioned
which you can look up on website called bestschools.net or something
close to that in name). My question would be, were do kids
(specifically boys) go from PS #6 (which stands for public school
number 6)? Becase, I need 7th grade, not elementary school. thanks.

2. Private School choices:
And what private school options are there for a 7th grade boy (such as
St. David's or Collegiate (spelling?)) or Xavier or Horace Mann in
riverdale? (I think st. david's only goes to 8th grade, please verify,
but that would be an option.)
beyond public, (if we have to shell out the big bucks) what are the
private school options? Many of the private schools in Manhattan are
single sex. Many stop at 6th or 8th grade. For example I went to one
that was girls only from K-12. Hence my ignorace regarding boys in 7th
grade. I have heard of St. David's, Collegiate, riverdale (outside of
manhattan, I guess in riverdale, I think this is Horace Mann, but not
really sure), and Xavier. All are boys schools as far as I know. I
also think, but am not sure that Dalton takes boys. (this is also a
private school like the last five I listed.)
Note: Apparently there is a book called the best Public schools in Manhattan,
and the Best Private Schools in Manhattan, and the DOE (department
of Education has a website) that tells you schools by zip code.
Partial answers okay. Just tell me your expected pay.

I have completed a lot of research on your question- but would like
some clarification on a few points. I have a list of public schools in
your district and region, including report cards with detailed
analysis and statistics on each school respectively. Charter schools
use a lottery admission process- so it isn't as if you can just decide
to have your child attend one of these schools. I have included
information on a number of charter schools in your region as well.

I still have to do some private school research to complete to give
you a full set of option.

My concern is that I haven't broken down each school according to all
of your specific criteria, but have provided links to report cards
providing information on the schools. This question is rather detailed
and would take a considerable amount of time (beyond the price listed
in my opinion) for a complete response. However, I can supply you with
links to sites within my response which will allow you to find all of
these details. Would you be satisfied with an answer along the lines
of what I have laid out above?

Thanks,
Anthony

If you have done a value job on this, then fine. Please make sure I
know which questions are answered and unanswered (in the least
cubersome way for you to let me know that.) PS, I got ahold of the
book on public schools, so don't further tax yourself there. Not sure
what your source is, but if it is other than the book, it is probably
great. Thank you for your work.

Is the book you have on "public" schools, as you wrote, or is it this
one on private schools? Just wanted to check before I continue.

I have been traveling, sorry to not get back to you sooner. I had the
book on public schools. Have since returned it to library. Answer in
full, or partial. Happy to pay what is reasonable. Please no more
clarifys. Just decide what if anything to submit. Thanks for your

Hi,

The school you are talking about is Hunter College High School. There
is a competitive (very competitive) exam for admission. It is now
co-ed and admits students at the 7th grade level only.

Hope that helps some with the research.
