The answer appears to depend on how strict you are in the interpretation and tradition of the giclee process. The standards adopted by professional giclee printers are probably higher than can be achieved with home ink jet printers. They include Master certification, exact reproduction and no indication of technology. Giclee Printers Association http://www.gpa.bz/ Still, some artists accept the Epson printer as a method of reproduction qualifying for the term giclee. Large format Giclee printers http://www.currys.com/knowledge/giclee.html Giclee simply means that a sprayed printing process has been used. Earlier technologies to produce giclee included the IRIS print. The image can be printed on 100% cotton paper or canvas, frequently in very large formats. http://www.newerapublishing.com/Company/Giclee.asp |

Nerv -- I just read a big article on this very thing in the WALL STREET JOURNAL the other day and checked to see if I threw it out. I didn't, so here's the info. Perhaps a reseracher can give you a link to it -- or a Nexis grab: "WHEN ART IMITATES ART: THE 'GICLEE' DEBATE." Subhead: "High-end digital copies sell for thousands, but experts question Value". Wednesday, July 21, 2004. Page D1. Front page of Personal Journal. Byline: Anne Marie Chaker. Lots of statistics and quotes by assorted artists, dealers, experts. It also gives 5 websites where you can see the work of artists who sell giclees. Maybe these can give you a clue as to how yours compares. The article also tells you the prices of what their original paintings go for vs. their giclees. http://www. villagegallery.com and http://www.art-broker.com (James Coleman) http://www.egallery.com (Michael Flohr) http://www.thomaskinkade.com (Thomas Kinkade) http://www.artshopnc.com or http://elswarence.com (Pino) http://www.markryden.com (Mark Ryden) |
