Hello kees-ga,
According to European Cities Tourism, "In the year 2001, visitors from
all parts of the world spent no fewer than 400 million overnights in
the cities of Europe." That's quite a lot of hotel stays!

While a number of hotel and tourism statistic reports require a fee,
there are several sources for free information which may meet your
needs. To begin, I would suggest that you visit TourMIS (Tourism
Marketing Information System) which includes free statistics on
overnights, arrivals, establishments and beds for more than 100
European cities, and request a free username and password. The site
mentions payment for some select databases, but I have tried their
registration process and the databases which you need to access for
hotel statistics are free. You are not required to provide any
personal information other than name and email address for
registration.
The URL for the actual database is here. You can search for statistics
by individual city or compare all of the European cities in one large
table. You also have control over the time period and whether you are
interested in arrivals or actual bed nights. The statistics cover
European cities from Aachen to Zurich and even provide information on
the average length of stay.

Here is a very basic example of the statistics available from their
Web site. This example only provides information by country (the
database provides city data) and does not go into as much detail as
the statistics available through the database. Please excuse the long
URL.

Here is a brief chart which you may find of interest from Smith Travel
Research (their large research reports cost several hundreds of
dollars). The chart, covering the month of March 2002, only includes a
few large cities (Tokyo, Sydney, Mexico City, etc.) and provides
occupancy statistics by percentage, not by number of visitors. I have
included it anyway, however, in case you find it of interest.

If you are interested in hotel industry research, you may also enjoy
browsing HotelBenchmark.com, the Web page of the Andersen Hotel
Industry Benchmark Survey. The entire report is only available to
survey participants, but they have a lot of neat industry data
available for free online. Click on the 'Know Research' link at the
top of the page for market analysis research for cities and countries
around the world.

Individual statistics such as you seek are published for many large
cities around the world by the individual tourist bureaus. You can use
the following searches to find such individual sites in Google:

I hope this helps to answer your questions. If you need anything more
specific, please don't hesitate to ask for further clarification.
