You may be surprised to know that baseball radar guns work in the
exact same principle as all doppler shift radar devices. The short of
it is the gun sends out pulses of electromagnetic waves at specific
frequencies, and when the waves hit and then bounce off an object,
another wave can be "heard". By some math, and some calculations, a
measurement of speed can be found and is done real time by computer
circuitry.

Howstuffworks.com has a very good article on the basics of radar
systems, including an animation to show you how doppler shift can be
used to determine object speeds. Baseball radar guns work on the same
principle and may be made smaller for convenience. Please take a look
at the links below for more information, and the complete explanation
at howstuffworks.com and another radar manufacturer's webpage. I've
also provided links to a couple radar guns which mention specifically
that they use the same frequency band (x-band, k-band, ka-band, etc.)
as some police speed radar guns. The different bands are designations
which the FCC allow for use of transmitting/receiving radio signals,
and aren't fundamentally different in usage as any of the others.
