Hi!

I am looking for 2 things:
1- the increase in the resolution of (a typical or entry level)
digital still cameras over time
2- The increase in the resolution of the cameras on camera phones over
time (if possible)

Resolution is typically measured in megapixels.

Many thanks

Gilles

Dear con3ultant-ga,

Thanks for the interesting walk back through history! I have included
a brief timeline, with some representative cameras (consumer
models..not professional models).

>>1990 - 0.15 megapixels

Dycam Model 1
"The Dycam, the first digital camera was introduced by a Californian
company who called it an 'image capture peripheral.' It's resolution
was lower than most still video cameras [note: 1/3-inch, 376 x 240
pixel CCD] and it only captured in grayscale monochrome [note: 256
grey levels]. It became available at less than a thousand dollars and
was able to store 32 separate images [note: on an internal 1MB RAM]."

>>1992 - 1.54 megapixels (I included this for interest, but this was a
very expensive camera and the first real digital camera developed for
photojournalists, not consumers)

Kodak DCS 200
"Resolution with the Kodak DCS 200 Digital camera was 1.54 million
pixels [1.54 megapixels], providing four times the resolution of
still-video cameras at that time."

>>1994 - 0.3 megapixels for under $1000

Apple Quick Take 100
"The first mass-market color digital camera for under $1000. 640 x
480 pixel CCD [0.3 megapixels]."

>>1995 - 0.4 megapixels

Kodak DC40
756 x 504 pixel CCD (.4 megapixels). MSRP $995.

>>1996 - still 0.4 megapixels but more internal memory and price dropping

Sony Cybershot
The consumer version (SONY Cybershot DSC-F1) was still at 640x480 (.3
megapixels), but the souped-up consumer "pro" version (Cybershot
DKC-1D1)was .4 megapixels at under $2,000.

>>1997 - first 1 megapixel camera for under $1000
