I need to verify that Alexis de Tocqueville ever described Americans
as "A restless, reasoning, adventurous race which does coldly what
only the ardor of passion can explain." If so, where and when?

Dear tiburonjimwood,

The quotation originally appeared in Alexis de Tocqueville's travel
description "Quinze jours au désert - récit d?un voyage dans l?Ouest
américain" (Fifteen Days in the Wilderness - Account of a Voyage in
the American West).

Chapter 6, "Description d?un établissement de pionniers", contains the
original French version of the quote:

"Cet homme inconnu est le représentant d?une race à laquelle
appartient l?avenir du Nouveau Monde : race inquiète, raisonnante,
aventureuse, qui fait froidement ce que l?ardeur des passions explique
seule (...)"

"Quinze jours au désert" is the description of two weeks of
Tocqueville's travels in America in July 1831. His entire journal of
his nine-month voyage through the USA was published posthumously as
"Voyage en Amérique" in 1865. "Quinze jours au désert" was chapter 13
of that book.

The English title of the travel journal is "Journey to America", and
the chapter from which the quotation derives is translated as "A
Fortnight in the Wilds".
