You may be aware of this, but on the Univ St. Thomas Houston website
they identify Hugo Mann as the founder of Wertkauf (who you noted
isn't the Mann you are looking for info on).

"A carpenter by trade, Hugo Mann opened his first furniture store in
1938.  Mann invented the idea of a supermarket.  He later founded
retail chain Wertkauf , which he sold to Wal-Mart in 1997.   Hugo Mann
is still alive.  His son Johannes still operates ten of the original
Mann Mobilia furniture stores in Germany.  This scholarship was
established by an anonymous donor who was impressed by Hugo Mann's
thoughtful and respectful approach to business."

It then continues,

"An external foundation has established a scholarship in memory of
Hugo Mann for MBA students enrolled in the Cameron School of Business
at the University of St. Thomas during the semester in which the
contest deadline occurs."
http://www.stthom.edu/cbes/rules.html

I know this isn't the Hugo Mann that you are refering to in your
question, but it seems odd to me that you seek this information for
students applying for a scholarship at the school that has an ethics
essay contest named for the other Hugo Mann. Are you sure you are
seeking the correct information? Just want to make sure before I
continue. I have found some information on the Mann that you requested
originally.

Also, do you already have access to all the information in the sources
you cite as references in your question? I could provide you with the
text from the sources as well if you need it.

Regards,
Anthony

My foundation established the Hugo Mann Scholarship. The Univ of St
Thomas, while awaiting bio details, tried to help, but posted info on
the wrong HM. My HM,with whom I worked in the '80s, left little in the
way of laudatory files- he was not the type to write an autobiography.
Despite contact with his widow and daughter, we have not much to go
on. I read German but , for example, don't know where to look in
German periodicals. I have the full text of all the references.
Deutscher Supermarkt was always a private company so analysts rarely
reported on it.
Look forward to your input.

I thought that may be the case. I'll see what I can find. Good luck.

I found this which -- if I am not mistaken -- is a brief notice of Mann's death:

8. August. Hugo Mann, langjaehriger Generaldirektor des Deutschen
Supermarkts (DS) und Mitglied in Aufsichts-bzw. Verwaltungsraeten
nationaler und internationaler Handelskonzerne, ist nach langer
schwerer Krankheit im Alter von 68 Jahren gestorben.

I'll let you know if anything else turns up.

cb3-ga,

Perhaps you should apply as a Google Researcher -- you seem to have
done quite an in-depth and professional search of the available
information on Hugo Mann.

I am not finding any additional materials of note. Doubtless, there
are archives at the various companies that Mann worked for that would
have additional biographical information. Unfortunately, it's a huge
undertaking trying to track something like that down, and there's no
assurance that the companies would make the information available
anyway.

I'll do a bit more poking around, and will certainly let you know if
anything turns up.
