The G3 Beige was the first Power Macintosh to use the new Power PC 750
architecture, especially designed for the Macintosh. It will run any
MacOS between 8.1 and OS X Jaguar, including OS 9.xx. OS X Panther
(currently 10.3.4) requires a built-in USB port, and will not run on
the Beige machines without a third-party patch.
OS 9 is available from a number of retail sources and often can be
found on eBay. Version 9.2.2 is the latest version (supplied by Apple
as an update that can be downloaded from Apple's support site and as
the Classic environment of OS X releases). There are links to vendors
of the various versions of the MacOS on the Lowendmac.com site. The
most likely upgrade path is to obtain MacOS 9.1 (sometimes this will
be in the form of iMac system CD, which will boot the G3 Beige) from a
commercial source, and then to download the OS 9.2.1 (87 MB in six
parts) and 9.2.2 (23 MB) updates, each of which will have to be
installed in proper sequence.
Note, that the onboard video of the Beige machines is adequate for
9.2.2, but that OS X is sluggish on those computers. It might be
desirable to install a PCI video baord, usually the one supplied with
the G3 Blue and White.
