Undergraduates registering at Birmingham University, England, were
givewn a reading list. In it was a book to help them study and it had
a title something like "36 common pitfalls ofargument" oe "36 errors
of logic". It was published by Pan. Can you find it for me? Is it
still in print?

I've failed miserably in tracking this down, but you may be interested
in Anthony Weston's excellent book 'A Rulebook for Arguments', which
boils down the structure and possible flaws of arguments to thirty
handy rules.

What a nightmare! My best bid is:

Logic and Language

"Oxford 1951 Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1951. 1st Edition.
[viii]+206+[2]pp. Green cloth. Covers quiteshelfworn, penciling to
endleaves, a good reading copy. (OP). Contains Ryle's "Systematically
Misleading Expressions;" Findlay's "Time: A Treatment of Some
Puzzles;" Paul Edward's "Bertrand Russell's Doubts about Induction;"
Margaret Macdonald's "The ..."

Apparently there was an edition published by Pan Books.

This may or may not help but there is a book called "Straight and
Crooked Thinking" by Robert Thouless published
by Pan Books copyrighted in 1930 & 1953 & 1974. An excerpt from the
book can be found at:

http://hjem.get2net.dk/bnielsen/38tricks.html

The excerpt talks about 38 common mistakes in arguments and sounded
like your request. The book is not in print
The book is listed at www.amazon.com in their Out of Print section and
is also located in many libraries throughout
the United States. Access to the WorldCat database would assist you
in determining which libraries. Check your local
library.

Hope this helps.
