So what's he been doing since then?
Not much, it seems.
He apparently still lives in the Bay Area. From time to time, he
apparently attend local charity events, broadcasters' reunions, etc. I
located several recent mentions of such activity in the S.F.
Chronicle.
Examples:
"The local chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and
Sciences will celebrate 50 years of Bay Area television with an 11
a.m. to 3 p.m. luncheon Saturday at the Mark Hopkins Hotel.
Among those expected to attend are former Bay Area television
anchors Van Amburg..."

"BROADCAST LEGENDS: It was the end of an era Sunday when TV legends
Belva Davis and Rollin Post celebrated their retirement after a
combined 70 years in Bay Area television.
...and former KGO-TV anchor Fred Van Amburg made a rare party appearance."
