Please, I just formatted my Hard Disk and I want to load it with Windows 98 OS but I don't know how to start. Please, can any one help me by explaining in details from scratch how to go about setting up the OS? I will be very happy if the disk partitioning process is included. |

Hello Jossychina Thank-you for your question. I will answer it in the form of a multi-part list that should lead you through the process smoothly. Should you have any questions regarding the procedure please ask for clarification and I will do my best to help. 1) Locate your Windows 98 CD and boot disk. The boot disk is usually supplied on a floppy disk (and is sometimes labelled as the Windows 98 Startup Disk). If you do not have a boot disk you can download a copy of the disk from this location: http://www.allbootdisks.com/index.php?option=com_remository&Itemid=42&func=selectfolder&filecatid=10 If your Windows 98 CD is an upgrade disk you will also need a previous copy of the Windows operating system (such as Windows 95). You will be asked to enter this disk later on if this is the case. 2) Remove all disks from your CD/DVD drives and switch off your computer. Place the boot disk into the floppy disk drive. 3) Switch your computer on and it should startup and start loading items from the floppy disk. This can take a minute or so. When this is completed the screen will have a prompt stating: A:> If a menu pops up giving you a number of options choose "Start computer without CD-ROM support" or its nearest equivalent. 4) The next step is to partition the hard disk. Please note that once you have partitioned the disk you will lose everything on it (If you do not want to partition the disk skip to step 16). At the A:> prompt type: fdisk 5) A warning message will now appear asking if you wish to enable large disk support. You should answer Y {enter} to this question (to allow you to use modern size hard disks). 6) You should now be at the FDisk Options screen. Press 1 to Create Primary DOS Partition. 7) At this point you may either use all the hard drive space as one disk or partition it into pieces. Microsoft recommends that at least 500Mb is given to your C: drive (your primary DOS partition). I will assume you wish to partition your drive so to the question "Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?" answer N {enter}. 8) A prompt will ask you to enter the size you wish to make this part of the disk (remember Microsoft recommends at least 500Mb). Enter the value you require and press {enter}. 9) Press Escape to return to the options menu. Press 2 {enter} to set the Active Partition. 10) Press 1 {enter} to choose the active partition. 11) Press Escape to return to the options menu. To create further partitions press 1 {enter}. 12) Press 2 {enter} to create an Extended DOS Partition. 13) Type the amount of space you wish on this disk and press {enter} and then Escape back to the options menu. I would usually use 2 partitions on a disk and choose the amount of space recommended by FDisk here. 14) Use the "Create Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition" menu to create further partitions as above (or refer to the Microsoft link below - section 7) i) 4) ) or skip this step if you do not wish to have more partitions. 15) After you have completed this exit the FDisk program and restart your computer (by pressing the on/of switch on the front). You should still have only the boot disk in your floppy disk drive and nothing in your CD/DVD drive(s). 16) After ther computer has been switched back on and you are back at the A:> prompt type: format c: This will format your C: drive and any data on it will be permanently lost. When you are asked for a label either simply hit {enter} or enter the name by which you wish this drive to be known (maximum 11 letters). This step take a few minutes to complete depending on the size of your hard disk. 17) Repeat step 16 replacing c: for each additional partition that you created above. For example type format d: instead of format c: at the A:> prompt. DO ***NOT*** TYPE format a: as this will erase your floppy disk drive! 18) Restart your computer again but this time choose the "Start computer with CD-ROM support". 19) You will receive a message on the screen stating which drive letter your CD drive is. You will need to remember this, from here on I will assume it is X: 20) When you get to the A:> prompt once again type this (remembering to replace X with the letter your computer told you in step 19 above): X:/setup 21) This will start a wizard that will then run you smoothly through the rest of the installation procedure. From this point onwards the installation should take 30-60 minutes to complete which is mostly automated with only a few questions for you to answer (time to read a magazine or get a drink!). As you can see there are a lot of steps to the installation but each step is quite straightforward once broken down. For further instructions I would recommend printing out the following articles for reference whilst you are following my instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;221829 http://www.duxcw.com/digest/Howto/software/windows/upgrade/fdisk.htm Should you require any further help or assistance on this matter please ask for clarification and I will do my best to help. |
