I need step-by-step directions for how to use PCAnywhere 10.0 through
a Linksys router (model BEFSR41; i.e. not wireless). The Host PC runs
Windows XP Home and a DSL connection; it's connected to the Linksys
router. The home PC has either Windows 2000 or Windows Me and no
router. Both have DSL connections. After reading everything I could
find, I am still clueless. I have forwarded the ports; I looked on the
DHCP clients table and got the IP address for my computer. But I still
don't know how to make it work. I am missing something, obviously. For
example, on the router, do I need to change default setting to
"Specify an IP address"?

I have a page that handles this. DSL, depending on vendor, may assign
a dynamic IP address upon connect. http://www.gwy.org/pca.html

Please leave a comment if this information is unclear.

You will have to remember that you need to forward the appropriate
ports to your IP address. You will also need to know your IP address
(I recomend DynDNS.org, they forward to your ip address for free.)
But if you want my personal opinion, PCAnywhere is garbage. Go to
www.realvnc.com, download the software and forward port 5800 and 5900
(udp, and tcp) to your internal ip address in your router. With VNC
you can even access your home computer through a java enabled
web-browswer.

If you dont know how to access the Router, http://192.168.1.1 The
default password is usually "admin", click the forwarding section.

See the step by step instructions below: Make sure that when
connecting from the remote to the host, that you use the public IP
address that is assigned to your router and not the private IP address
you have assigned to your computer. If you are unsure of your public
ip address, you can find it by browsing to http://whatismyip.com from
the machine that will be hosting the PC Anywhere session.

Note: These steps refer only to the BEFSR41 Version 1 and Version 2.
For Version 3, skip to the bottom of this answer. Verify your router
version by looking on the bottom of the router next to the model
number (no version number means Version 1).

1. You must set a static IP address on the machine you wish to host
PC Anywhere from.

2. Once the static IP address has been assigned to the computer, open
a web browser and type in the IP address of the router into the
browser address bar (192.168.1.1 is the default IP of Linksys
routers).

3. Log in to your Linksys router.

4. Click on the Advanced tab on the upper right corner. Once the
new page appears, click on the Forwarding tab.

5. You will need to input an entry onto this Forwarding table.

For example:

Customized Applications Ext. Port Protocol TCP/IP Address
PC Anywhere 5631 Both [host computer address]

Make sure that the TCP/IP Address matches the static IP address of the
computer that was assigned in Step 1.

Click Apply at the bottom of the page to make the changes.

Restart your computer

_________________________________________________________________________

1. You must set up a static IP address on the computer that you
want to forward ports to.

2. Once the static IP address has been assigned, please go to
that computer and open a web browser.

3. Once your browser opens, type http://192.168.1.1 into the
"Address Bar" and click GO or press [Enter]

4. A box should appear asking for a ?User Name? and a ?Password?.
Log into your router using your username and password.

5. This should open the BEFSR41 V3 ?Setup page?. Click onto the
Applications & Gaming page.

6. This will open the ?Port Range Forwarding? sub-section. To
forward a port or a range of ports, you must fill in the options
across one line of the table for each port or range or ports. Please
configure the following settings for each line:

?Application?: PC Anywhere
?Start?: 5631
?End?: 5631
?Protocol?: should be set to both
?IP Address?: the static IP address number you assigned to your
computer in Step 1. For example, 192.168.1.3
?Enable?: Check this box to Enable to activate the port or port range
in this line of the table.
7. Once all settings in the table have been set, click on the
Save Settings button toward the bottom of the page to save changes.
Click Continue when prompted to reload the page.

8. If everything has been configured correctly, all Incoming
traffic of the port or range of ports that you have entered will be
sent to the specified computer.

Thank you all for your generous time and care in providing comments.
Guess what: I wondered what "Block WAN request" on the router was; it
was enabled. I disabled it and voila! PCAnywhere worked. I don't know
why Symantec and Linksys don't point this out for beginners . . .

But thank you all very much.
