Hello dtnl42~
Everyone wants to be on Oprah. Unfortunately, this slims your chaces
of getting booked on her show--but there are some tried and true
things you can do to up your chances.
* Watch at least 2 to 4 weeks of Oprah. Record the shows, and watch
them after hours, if necessary. Make sure they are current episodes.
* Review the show's website ( www.oprah.com ), which lists subjects,
upcoming features, and a "be on the show" email address.
* Pick a hot topic, and pitch it to the producers. You must pitch a
topic or a bit of news, not just yourself or a product you're selling.
Pick a topic that fits in with the Oprah show, and prove that you're
expert enough to be featured on an episode covering it.
* Send supporting materials along with your pitch letter. (Yep, it's
probably better to pitch by email or mail; if you must phone, leave a
VERY brief phone pitch on voice mail and follow it up with written
material.) This can include your bio, your book, a demo...whatever.
But keep it short. Piles of stuff gets sent to the producers and
you're more likely to have your stuff looked at if it's brief and to
the point.)
Keep your pitch concise and to the point. Give the best points, best
illustration(s), etc. If you only had one minute to present your
pitch, what would you include? Include THAT information, and nothing
else.
* Consider the whole show. Plan it out. How will each segment unfold
and who will be the other guests?
* Target your pitch to the producer who tends to produce.
* Try to position yourself as such an expert that nobody else can take
your place on the show.

There are also a myriad of books and CDs promising to teach you the
secrets to getting on Oprah. My feeling is that they are probably a
waste of time and money. Simple, timely, newsworthy, and short pitches
are the key.
Good luck,
