Question ID: 382693
Is there a way to locate, on the computer itself, the phone number of
the line LEADING INTO THE COMPUTER? Not the numbers I use to dial-up
to gain access.
I need to get this line repaired, and I cannot locate the number.
Everytime I call to get it fixed of course the phone co wants to know
the number and I have to say, I don't know. It appears that nobody
else does, either, including the phone company. There is a reward for
an answer!!

Hello groendog,

Can you plug a phone into the back of the computer and get a dial
tone? Or unplugging the line and plugging it into a regular phone?

If yes, try phoning the operator (zero) and telling them that you
forgot your phone number and ask them for it.

No matter what I do there is no dial tone. No phone company is willing
to say the line is theirs. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON!!! (Do you
sense a degree of frustration?) (Incidentally, when I set this
computer up, it worked just fine and was on line. Three weeks later,
they tell me it has been offline for 10 days, no one from work called
to tell me, and I find a strange network device "enabled" I took that
off and "enabled" my usual dial-up, but now there is no dial tone.)

In short, yes I have tried phones on that line and on the computer,
and the line appears to DOA.

Yikes, I now understand how frusterated you must be!

Are you sure that there is somebody paying for the phone line? The
fact that it has been disabled might be because nobody was paying for
it?

I would ask to get a new line installed if that is an option... you
could also try to get the phone company to assign a new number to the
line and then they would have to fix it?

That last sounds the most sensible. I was hoping to get it up and
going so they can get their bloodwork online just until I can get a
high speed internet cable put in. The Hi speed people, being low speed
themselves, set us up for a residential account, even tho it clearly
said "Animal Hospital." Hmmm. So now it will be another 10 days before
the lowspeedhispeed people CALL me to set up a new account and an
appointment.
This time I am going to hook huge electrical devices up to the mouse,
the desk and the chair where the computer is, that will effectively
fry anyone who touches the thing without my permission. Sorry that
last is just a rant. Had to say it. Thanks for the suggestion. It does
sound viable.

By the way, I think someone at work disabled the line, not the phone
company. Records indicate we are still paying.

Is this phone in your home or office?

If this is your home, you would have a phone bill from the phone
company, the phone number would be part of the account number, to
identify which number you are being charged for.

If it is an office, perhaps you can ask the phone company for a list
of phone numbers currently assigned to your address, and if any are
currently suspended, if not you can try dialing the numbers you don't
recognize until you find a dead line.

These are also good ideas. I think by the time I get a regular line
installed (this is a place of business) that Comcast will be ready to
install their high speed cable, so I guess I will just wait and see. I
am becoming resigned.

This time I am going to put some password protection on the computer
to limit the number of people who can get on. Since I no longer really
work there, but am simply doing this out of boredom and the goodness
of my heart, it may mean putting me back on the payroll. It's
difficult to believe, since my computer ability is very limited,
really, but I am the most advanced computer person they have!! The
Boss doesn't even know how to get the mail, even tho I have showed him
about 50 times.
