Question ID: 382886
I have installed Windows pro XP on my second hand computer - a full
licensed version. However I have to log on EACH TIME I switch on my
computer. Sometimes I have to do this by phone even though I have
broadband connection, and it takes ages.

 The error messages are:

You have not successfully activated this product, or the current
license is incompatible with the existing operating system.

or

You have not activated Windows within the grace period. To activate
Windows, contact a customer service representative by telephone.

I have contacted Microsoft help - they were useless. What can I do so that I
do not have to logon each time? I do not want to do a complete re-install.

One way around the problem is to use Hibernate rather than switch
off, but that is only a partial solution. Could the problem may be
that the previous user had an unlicensed version of windows installed?
Also sometimes my clock is wrong

If the clock is wrong depending on the age of the system, you may need
to replace the battery on the motherboard. In addition, if you
installed the upgrade version of XP over a non registered older
version of windows, this may be the problem. I understand that you
don't want to wipe out the entire system, however a clean install may
be the only way to get things running smoothly for you again. If you
don't have the original operating system that was on the computer
and/or you don't have the full version of XP, you may not be able to
do this. Also, have you checked the system requirements for Xp and
does your PC meet those requirements?
Hope this helps.

Thanks - it seems sound advice.
I am sure that the system requirements are more than met, but I am
begining to think that a clean install may be the only answer, and I
will also have to make plans to replace the battery on the
motherboard.

There might be another answer.

There's an app that resets the computer time to defeat activasion. by
installing your version of xp onto that system may have caused the app
to actually keep restoring bad activasion data to Windows.

You can verify this by start, run, cmd, enter, in command windows type
services.msc and look for a service called RESET if you have such a
service then right click on it select propeties and change startup to
disable. this will disable the app, restart your system and it should
be back to normal. if it isn't then just pop in your cd and select
upgrade (no need to format, just repair the system files).

The reason why i think it's the reset app and not the bios battery is
because you would be getting errors at post bootup, and also newer
PC's (anything that runs XP Properly is a NEW pc) rarely fail the
batteries.....altough i could be wrong..........

i WILL HAVE A GO AT THE reset AND HOPE IT WORKS. I am just leaving for
a few days and will report success or otherwise here next week.

Thanks
