Question ID: 38339
I am helping to build a custom rack mount cabinet and need the spacing
specifications for the vertical mounting holes. Also I need standards
for threads, hole diameters, and any general 19” rack mount
specifications. These are to be used an a AutoCAD Design File.

Thanks,

Chris

Greetings!

It's ineresting - I've worked with 19" racks for years, and never
bothered to find out what the specifications are on them. It turns
out that the specifications are set by the EIA (Electronic Industries
Alliance). Amazing. Everything has a standard these days!

The screw thread pitch does not appear to have a specification -- the
more common are 10-32 x 1/2" screws, 12-24x1/2" screws, or square
holes.

This PDF file from SSIForum.org lists the more common EIA dimensions
with drawings:
http://www.ssiforum.org/docs/server_rack_spec_v1_1.pdf

There are two hole patterns covered, the universal (as shown in the
PDF above) with spacing at 5/8" (16mm), 5/8 (16mm), 1/2" (13mm)
centers, and the wide, with spacing at 11/4 (32mm), 1/2" (13mm)
centers.

For the full specification, you will have to order the 310 standard
from the IHS link below that West-ga has provided. You can also get
the standard electronically by subscribing to the IHS electronic
library at:
http://www.ihs.com/standards/index.html

Excellent answer. You covered everything I needed. Again I'd like to
thank west for showing me to the full specs, and thank google for such
a great service. The first answer I received was terrible, but google
reposted it and I am very happy with the results.
