Question ID: 383538
I am carving a piece of ivory, unfortunatly the permanent ink that i
used penetrated the ivory and has created an unsightly black stain.
It has also traveled along fractures which i hadn't noticed before but
are all to visible now.
the brand of marker is staedtler lumocolor. I am looking for the best
way to remove the stain (aside from carving it away). any help would
be appreciated.

Hi chujybear,

Unfortunately, deep stains, such as paint, ink or oils probably cannot
be removed as ivory is porous and absorbs these materials.

You might try contacting Staedtler, Inc

STAEDTLER Inc.
21900 Plummer Street
Chatsworth, California 91311-4001
E-Mail: info@staedtler-usa.com
http://www.staedtler-usa.com/

From the FAQs page:

Can STAEDTLER Lumocolor permanent pens be used on fabric? We do not
recommend the use of STAEDTLER Lumocolor permanent universal pens on
clothing, as it is not intended to withstand laundering. However, they
can be used on fabric for wall hangings and other decorative items.

Did you know that... Lumocolor permanent ink can be removed from most
smooth surfaces without any trouble at all using spirit?

CLEANING IVORY (1/2 down on the page)

A representative of The International Ivory Society suggests mild
dishwater soap and water. Wash, rinse and dry ~ do not soak. Deep
stains, such as paint, ink or oils probably cannot be removed as ivory
is porous and absorbs these materials.

You might try contacting The Scrimshaw Studio and asking if the ink
can be removed, and how to proceed.
