Hi- I have a Windows XP PC; in the last 6 months, every time I surf
particular sites, I get disconnected.
I have a DSL connection wired via a router (I have vonage long
distance service)- the router distributes the DSL to the phone and to
the PC.
I get disconnected I realized most often when I visit 2 sites:
www.EBAY.com and http://money.cnn.com/markets/morning_call/
I am not sure WHY these 2 sites. Maybe they have some kind of
mechanism to refresh the pages (???) - however I go to other pages
that refresh themselves and this does not happen. (not that I realized
anyway)
Any idea what might cause such bizarre behaviour?

One more thing: I tested the connection bypassing the router, and it
works just fine. No disconnections (as of yet)

Howdy hsb-ga,
What is the brand, model number and the last time (if ever) you have done a
firmware update of your router? Thanks!

What is the brand, model number and the last time (if ever) you have done a
firmware update of your router?
Here are the details: Dell Dimenson 8100 (bought in 2001 I think),
Windows XP, , Never done a firmware update of the Netgear
router/gateway (RP614?) (and no clue how)

Howdy hsb-ga,
Appreciate your patience with the diagnostic process. The problem you are
experiencing is often cleared up by upgrading the router's firmware.
First, you will need to determine which one of the two versions of the RP614
you have. Look at the label on the bottom of your router. It will either
have "RP614" or "RP614v2." It is very important to determine which one you
have as the firmware, etc. is not the same across the models.
You will want to determine your current firmware version as well. Open your
browser and put in the following in the Address box: http://192.168.0.1 and
then hit enter. This should open the router's Configuration Manager. Type
in (without the quotes) "admin" for the User Name and (without the quotes)
"password" for the password. After you get access to the Manager screen,
click on the lefthand menu item "Router Status" and the firmware version
should appear there.
Depending on the router version, you will want to go to one of the following
two web pages for the firmware upgrade.
For the RP614:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products_automatic/RP614v1.asp
For the RP614v2:
http://kbserver.netgear.com/products_automatic/RP614v2.asp
If you still have the manual for your router, it outlines the upgrade process.
If you don't have your manual anymore, then you can download from the above
addresses. You will want to upgrade your firmware one version higher, and so
on, until (hopefully) your problem disappears.
Please do the above and report your results back here. Feel free to ask any
questions you might have along the way. Thanks!

Thanks much - I went throught the upgrade process; I added 3 files to
the router. I think the next step is to watch the router over next few
days and see if it works ok.
One of the websites it always disconnect with is the money.cnn.com
site- that is a Market site. I will be able to test the site during
the week (not weekends, given market is closed). Will test it and
report back.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Howdy hsb-ga,
Try going back a firmware revision on your router and see if that clears
the problem.
