Scottish Names" gives: "SCROGGS. From the lands of Scrogges in the
barony of Stobo, Peebleshire. Robert [de Scroggs] lost his life in the
service of David de Lyne, and because of that his son Simon had a
grant of lands of Scrogges, c. 1208." Scroggs is a
Scandinavian-derived word for scrub bushes, or scrub land."
