We just saw the Giants/Reds game last night where 28 hits occured.
That made the party I was with start thinking about the record for a)
most hits scored by a single team in a nine inning game AND b) most
hits scored by combined teams in a nine inning game. Any ideas?

Hi sasheim,

-Most hits in a game-

"The modern-day record for most hits by one team in a nine-inning game
-- 31 -- is shared by the 1901 New York Giants and the 1992 Milwaukee
Brewers.

On June 9, 1901, the Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds, 25-13, in
Cincinnati while on Aug. 28, 1992, the Brewers beat up on the Toronto
Blue Jays, 22-2, at SkyDome."

Friday, August 28
Milwaukee Brewers defeated Blue Jays, 22-2

"The third place Brewers set an AL record with 31 hits in their 22-2
rout of the Blue Jays at SkyDome. It is the most hits in a game by a
major league team in 91 years, and this time there were no fans on the
field to add to help the hit total. The 26 singles sets a new AL mark.
Kevin Seitzer and Scott Fletcher each get five hits, combine for eight
RBIs and seven runs. Milwaukee fails to score in just one inning as
they record their first win on the road for the Brewers in 11 games."

Another interesting record for you:

"The Major League record for most hits by one team in a game is 33.
The Cleveland Indians edged Philadelphia, 18-17, in 18 innings on July
10, 1932 in Cleveland."

Sunday, July 10
Cleveland Indians lost to Athletics, 18-17

"An extraordinary 18-inning game is won by the Athletics at Cleveland,
18-17. A's winning P Ed Rommel pitches 17 innings in relief, giving up
a record 33 hits. To save train fare for a single-date appearance,
Connie Mack brought only two pitchers. The starting pitcher is knocked
out after one inning and only Rommel is left. Johnny Burnett of
Cleveland has nine hits in 11 at bats."

My colleague markj-ga kindly directed me to the following sites for
the record for most combined hits for a nine-inning game.

Historic Events
1928 - Tigers, Yanks Get Record 45 Hits
"The Tigers and Yankees combined for 45 hits, the record for a
9-inning game. Detroit got 28 of the hits and won, 19-10. Four Tigers
got four hits apiece, another major league record."

HickokSports
http://www.hickoksports.com/calendar/sep29.shtml

"September 29, 1928: The Tigers and Yankees set an offense record when
they combine for 45 hits, Detroit tallying 28 of them. Four Tigers
collect four hits apiece for an American League record, as Detroit win
the slugfest 19?10. The Yanks will finish the season with the top
three RBI men (Lou Gehrig and Ruth with 142, Bob Meusel with 113),
just the 2nd time this has happened. It will occur just once more,
with the 1932 Phils."
