A friend has been put in charge of finding songs she and some friends
will sing to three other friends who are going away, as part of a
little party they are having to say goodbye. I want to help my friend
gather such songs, thus this question. The more goodbye songs the
better. I will consider this question correctly answered if a list of
ten or more goodbye songs are provided.

GOODBYE (from The White Horse Inn)
Words and music by: Ralph Benatsky

My heart is broken, but what care I? Such pride inside me has woken,
I shall do my best not to cry, by and by,
When the final farewells must be spoken.
I'll join the legion, that's what I'll do, and in some far distant region,
Where human hearts are staunch and true; I shall start my life anew.

Goodbye, it's time I sought a foreign clime,
Where I may find there are hearts more kind than I leave behind.
And so I go to fight the savage foe,
Although I know that I'll be sometimes missed by the girls I've kissed.

In some Abyssinian, French dominion I shall do my bit,
And fall for the flag if I must.
Where the desert sand is nice and handy, I 'll be full of grit,
You won't see my heels for the dust.

I'll do or die, or know the reason why when told,
Of boldly opposed last stands for the fatherland.

Goodbye. Goodbye. I wish you all a last "Goodbye".
Goodbye. Goodbye. I wish you all a last "Goodbye".

For a more quirky song, try Peter Cook and Dudley Moore's Goodbye song.
This is the shortened version.

Now is the time to say Goodbye
Now is the time to yield a sigh (yield it, yield it)
Now is the time to wend our waaaayeeeeee
Until we meet again
Some sunny day.

Tattybye

there is always "Hit the Road, Jack" by Ray Charles!!!!

Everytime we say goodbye
I die a little
Everytime we say goodbye
I wonder why a little
Why the gods above me
Who must be in the know
Think so little of me
They allow you to go

When you're near
There's such an air
Of spring about it
I can hear a lark somewhere
Begin to sing about it
There's no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Everytime we say goodbye

There's no love song finer
But how strange the change
From major to minor
Everytime we say goodbye

Here is one that's been a favorite of mine for, yikes, nearly 40 years.

Tom Paxton composed and recorded it in the sixties (album: "Outward
Bound," 1966). It has a very simple but memorable melody, easily
accompanied on guitar with just your three basic chords. It is also
easy to harmonize with.

Carolyn Hester also recorded this in the sixties, and changed the
lyrics a little--a practice I generally don't care for, but in this
case I think I like them better. She sang "May you find..." and
"Remember when the wine was better than ever again" and "Things we've
learned." That line about "things we've learned" spoke to me deeply
when I was not yet twenty and thought I'd seen a lot. Now, indeed,
now...

===================================================

OUTWARD BOUND
(Tom Paxton)

Outward bound, upon a ship that sails no ocean
Outward bound, it has no crew but me and you
All alone when just a minute ago the shore was filled with people
With people that we knew

  (Refrain after each verse)
So farewell, adieu, so long, vaya con Dios
May they find whatever they are lookin for
Remember when the wine was better than ever before
We could not ask, we could not ask for more

Outward bound upon a journey without ending
Outward bound with uncharted waters beneath our bow
For behind, the green familiar shore is fading into time
And time has left us now

Outward bound, upon a ship with tattered sail
Outward bound upon a crooked lonesome trail
Things we learn, we'll just be satisfied in knowing
And we'll tell it to our kids as a fairy tale

Bit of a different genre into the mix for you:

"Time to Go" by Supergrass http://www.supergrass.tv/songs/TIMETOGO.php
"Take a Bow" by Madonna http://madonna.lyrics-songs.com/lyrics/63189/

Both quite slow songs but rather groovy :)

this has been really helpful for me too... I'm in my last year at high
school and on the last day we all sing a song... most commonly "Good
Riddance (Time Of Your Life)" by Greenplay (always gets me crying) but
my friends and I are looking for something new.

Some of us have been at school together since we were 5 (my school
goes from year 1-13) so we wanted something special...
