According to Fortune(
http://www.fortune.com/lists/G500/indsnap_41.html ), the top 10
Pharmaceuticals companies are

1	Merck
2	Johnson & Johnson
3	Pfizer
4	GlaxoSmithKline
5	Bristol-Myers Squibb
6	Aventis
7	Pharmacia
8	Novartis
9	Roche Group
10	AstraZeneca

these figures are from the company's web sites, or from online company
profiles-- which means the counting methods may be different for each
company

Merck - 7,800 ( http://www.merck.com/mrl/sites.html )

Johnson & Johnson - 9,000 (
http://www.jnj.com/careers/innovation.html#research )

Pfizer - 12,000 ( http://www.pfizer.com/cr/groton/welcome.html )

GlaxoSmithKline - 16,000 (
http://www.gsk.com/financial/reports/ar/pdf_excel/report/report.pdf
 , page 14)

Bristol-Myers Squibb - 4,500 (
http://www.biospace.com/company_profile.cfm?CompanyID=1319 , google
search terms "Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute
employees")

Aventis - 10,500 : 1,000 at Aventis Pasteur (
http://www.aventispasteur.com/us/rnd/ ) ; 4,500 at Aventis Behring (
http://www.aventisbehring.com/AventisBehring/CorporateOverview/CorporateOverview.asp
); and 5,000 at Aventis Pharma (
http://www.aventis.com/main/0,1003,EN-XX-26183---,FF.html )

Pharmacia - 4,500 ( http://www.scandinavianow.com/biotech/amersham.html
, google seach terms "Pharmacia research development employees")

Novartis - 2,200 ( http://www.medzilla.com/nvsus-profile.html , google
search terms "Novartis research development employees")

Roche Group - Unsure : 1,100 at Palo Alto. Roche Group is made of so
many subsidiaries, it's hard to tell how many they have total, I've
sent an email to their R&D Media office for more info (
http://paloalto.roche.com/randd/RandD.html )

AstraZeneca - 10,000 (
http://www.astrazeneca.com/mainnav1/s_research/c_research/index.html )

I hope that answers your question-- if you need any more detail feel
free to ask for clarification.

(and leli-ga, thanks for putting me on the right track.)

Impressive speed - however a couple of these are clearly not right.

The BMS, Pharmacia and Novartis numbers are just for a single
subsidiary not the whole company (e.g., the Novartis number is only
for Novartis US which is why the number is so low, similarly the
Pharmacia number seems to be the total employee number for a
particular division).

Better numbers may not be possible (as you say in the case of Roche).

this is becomming rather difficult. each of these companies - BMS,
Pharmacia, and Novartis, have a flagship pharmaceuticals subsidiary
that a great deal of information is available about. but presumably
the other subsidiaries do research as well
I found a list of BMS's subsidiaries from their SEC filings (
http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/14272/000001427201500006/exhibit21.htm
), and it is overwhelming

unfortunately, a company does not seem to report how they divide up
their employees in a SEC report

i've fired off emails to each of those companies, but the chance of
getting a response is pretty slim...

i'm still looking for another source of data...

From this morning's New York Times:

"Pfizer Said to Buy Large Drug Rival in $60 Billion Deal"

"The drug giant Pfizer has agreed to acquire the Pharmacia
Corporation for $60 billion in stock, making it by far the
most dominant drug maker in the world, according to
executives close to the deal."

The Wall Street Journal also carried the story, reporting that this
merger will put pressure on other of the pharmaceutical giants, such
as Merck and Bristol-Myers Squibb to consider combinations.
