Question ID: 384187
Question about Windows XP. It involves Airport Express and iTunes
playing music over a stereo, but I think the issue is essentially an
XP issue.

I have a Dell PC running Windows XP that is connected to a Dlink
router, which is connected to a DSL modem. I want to use Airport
Express to play music on my stereo. I have a wireless network and can
use the iTunes on my laptop to play music through the stereo, so I am
pretty sure that the Airport Express is configured properly (the green
light is always on). The issue is that when I use iTunes on my PC,
then try to connect to the Airport Express, I get a very breif message
saying that "network cable is unplugged." This happens for about two
seconds, then the connection appears to be restored (I can then
connect to the internet, so I don't doubt that the connection has been
restored). However, iTunes then hangs, somewhat, saying "Connecting
to Living Room". ("Living Room" is the name I have given to the
speakers the Airport Express is attached to).

When I go to Network Connections, it shows only four connections under
"Lan Or High-Speed Internet," (I deleted the other connection
categories in an attempt to fix this problem) one of which is
enabled, which I assume is my connection to the internet.

My question: how do I stop iTunes from causing the network cable to
unplug like it does?

Hi learyjo-ga,

The issue seems to be due to the intermittent wireless connection along
with the dhcp mediasense feature in xp causing the above mentioned problem
to happen. You could disable the mediasense feature from the following
microsoft article:
 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;239924

Hope this fixes your problem.

PS: Also try assigning a static ip address to your computer, if the
mediasense fix does not seem to work.
