I want people to be able to send me a fax, but I don?t have a fax
machine and don?t intend to buy one.
Apparently there are programs that allow you to receive faxes, and also send them.
I saw this one at
http://www.angelfire.com/wizard2/hkeylocal/faxby.htm
But it doesn?t work with Windows 98, which is the OS I use.
Also there?s a service at
http://home.efax.com/s/r/efax_au?CMP=OTC-au
but I don?t want to pay for a service if I can do it for free, you get me?
Please note that I use dial-up internet, which may or may not be a
problem. Also I live in Australia.
What are the best programs for doing this sort of thing? |

Hi markabe,
I'm posting this as a clarification because there is only 1 company
that provides the availability to receive faxes for free. (There are
companies that offer a free trial, but after the trial is over you'll
be asked to pay.)
To complicate matters, to send faxes for free there are only 2
companies that provide the availability to send faxes for free.
If you feel the information I've provided answers your question to
your satisfaction, please post a clarification requesting me to post
in the answer box.
With that said, this is what I found:
The Free Fax Provider I used in the past was JConnect Free and the
software is easy to install and work with.
https://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/page/faxServices
JConnect is FREE... if you don't use the Premier Service. With the
free service you can only recieve... not send.
https://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/signupFree
jConnect Free Registration
Once you have completed registration, you will have a personal phone
number you can use to receive voicemail and faxes as email attachments
(subject to certain limitations as set forth in the Customer
Agreement). After you see what jConnect Free can do, upgrade to
jConnect Premier and get all the benefits of a local jConnect number,
plus the ability to send faxes, make conference calls, and use
Email-By-Phone.
When you sign up for jConnect Free, you can:
Get a j2 assigned fax and voicemail number.
Receive faxes and voicemail in email.
Read faxes, listen to voicemail, and organize both using j2 Messenger.
Postal Address - Contact us via regular mail at the following address:
j2 Global Communications
6922 Hollywood Blvd., 5th floor
Los Angeles, CA 90028
USA
Contact Customer Service
https://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/page/help
They have several pages of Frequently Asked Questions
https://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/page/help
For example: How do I open a fax or voice message I've received?
Question
I received an email that says I have a fax or a voice message. How do I open it?
Answer
If you are using Windows, you will need to download j2 Messenger
(available at http://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/page/download) to view
your faxes and listen to your voice messages. We recommend that you
download the installation file to your Desktop so you can easily
locate it. Once you have downloaded the installation file,
double-click it to install j2 Messenger.
When you receive a fax or voice message, it arrives in your email as
an attachment. In order to open the file, you must download it to your
hard drive. Most email programs allow you simply to click (or
double-click) on the attachment, and doing so will cause the file to
be downloaded to a temporary location and then opened automatically in
j2 Messenger. However, email programs such as AOL and CompuServe
require separate steps of downloading the file (to a directory of your
choice) and then locating and double-clicking the file to open it. You
may find it easiest to save the file to your Desktop. If you do this,
then simply double-click that file after downloading, and it should
open in j2 Messenger. (If there was no attachment on the email you
received, click here.)
Please refer to our Mac or UNIX instructions if you are using either
of these operating systems.

tlspiegel-ga,
I signed up for the jConnect free service. It gave me the following number:
(253) 981-1317
It seems to me like the sort of number used in the US. However, when I
signed up, I did specify a Brisbane,Australia number.
Does this mean that I can only use jConnect free with a US number? I
ask this because not many people in Australia would want to send a fax
to the US.

Hi markabe,
CallCenter is a program you can download for free. It works with
Windows 98 and a dial-up connection although if you have only one
phone line, then you'll have to be offline to use it.
Free CallCenter:
"CallCenter is a FREE 32-bit, integrated fax, voicemail and data
communications application with a simple to use interface providing
fax send and receive functionality, basic (single mailbox) answering
machine capability, and sophistcated data communications."
http://v3fax.com/freecc.htm
Is that what you're looking for (hopefully it will work in Australia)?

Hi markabe,
The only thing I can suggest is for you to contact JConnect via email
(or phone) and ask them your questions. I do know it works and it
worked well for me.
The second clarification about services in Australia - I peformed my
search on the internet, and if a company was based in Australia and
didn't advertise on the internet then I would have no information.
Try contacting Jconnect.

Hi markabe,
I found a program (MightyFax) that allows you to send and recieve faxes at:
http://www.rkssoftware.com/mightyfax/overview.html
MightyFax comes with a free 30-day trial
However, if that doesn't work for you,
There is a free Outbound Fax service that covers Australia at:
http://www.tpc.int/sendfax.html
Now, since MightyFax actually costs $19.95, I would like to know if you
consider the cost as an exception to "Free only services".
Thanks.
