I'm new to the shirt business and thought it would be cool to put images of celbrities with clever humorous(not libelous) text next to their image. I was having fun with it until I got a cease and desist email from a lawfirm representing John Holmes. It turns out that John Holmes is a corporation and that they agressively protect his image (which I took off the internet without asking...he was dead for god sakes...who would,ve though he would email me from the grave???) I did exactly what they said and ceased, but it left me with many questions like... What if I wanted to make a shirt that made fun of Martha Stewart with her image on it? If I can't do it, how come the National Enquierer can use her image on the cover of their magazine to do essentially the same thing? What if I wanted to use Arnold Swartzenegger on a shirt? He's a politician...isn't he fair game? I heard he sued over a boble head figure and won due to his celebrity status??? I'm presently using celbrity mug shots on my shirts...isn't that okay since it's a public record? |
