Hi!!

You can give us more detailed info if you download and run Everest
Home Edition, it is a freeware that offers an accurate system
information of low-level full hardware information.
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en

Download it from here:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

Use this soft to know which chips and motherboard model are installed
in your computer, with this info we can give you a better answer.
Start looking at the Computer --> Summary section to get the info.

Another thing that I need to know is if you need instructions to
reinstall the Operative System, formating the hard drive, etc.

I will wait your response to continue the research.

Hi!!

According with my research some PCCHIPS 810 mainboard series come with
Onboard Duron CPU, what I understand from this is that the CPU is not
replaceable, and there are some other models of this 810 series that
has a Socket-462 Processor, so can you clarify this point?

You can find the version number of your motherboard written onto the
board near the keyboard connector, or silkscreened in very small print
in the corner of the board nearest PCI#1 connector (also near
"JUSB1").
Here is a list of some possible numbers:
Motherboard version 1.0
Motherboard version 1.3
Motherboard version 1.6
Motherboard version 3.0
Motherboard version 5.0
Motherboard version 7.0
Motherboard version 7.0a
Motherboard version 7.1
Motherboard version 7.1c
Motherboard version 9.0m

Hi!!

I post this request to let you know that each version of the 810
motherboard supports different types of processors, so knowing that is
important to give you a proper answer.

Hi Livio,

Thank you for your patience.

I found REVISION 3.0 on the top left corner of the mainboard, below
the PCI slot. There are also 2 paper stickers underneath, one reads
"A", the other one "5".

I am very impressed by your professional attitude. Thank you again.

Hi!!

Thank you Steve for your understanding. I am posting the answer as you
suggest me in your clarification.
I'll make you a proposition, you know which models of CPU are correct
(official and unofficial) for your motherboard. This decision is
yours, the better option is the higher one that be compatible (I
suggest you an AMD Athlon model). Well as I said the proposition is
that for any additional question you will have regarding this topic
please ask me using the clarification feature, I will gladly research
you for further assistance.

This page may be help you to select which CPU to buy:
"Benchmark Marathon" :
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030217/index.html

Charts:
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030217/cpu_charts-32.html

Comparison tables:
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030217/images/cpu_chart.gif

When you will go to buy your new CPU go with a print of this answer
(at least remember this part: "The "official" words say that this
motherboard supports AMD Athlon 650MHz~1.4GHz / Duron 550~950MHz - 200
FSB (front-side bus speed) only (excluding Morgan/Palomino)" ) and ask
to the seller all the questions you have.

Use the following forum for help:
"The PCChips Lottery BBS - M8xx - Athlon/Duron Boards":
http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142-bin/cgi-bin/ibrd/forums.cgi?forum=5

Regarding the BIOS configuration I think that in the manual document
is all the info needed, but the forum is a great source, also to ask
there about the better CPU for your board.

Follows a repost of my comment that you kindly accepted as an answer,
I am very thankful for that:

As you told me your motherboard is a PCChips 810LR Version 3.0.
The "official" words say that this motherboard supports AMD Athlon
650MHz~1.4GHz / Duron 550~950MHz - 200 FSB (front-side bus speed) only
(excluding Morgan/Palomino).
I also found that some people had success running an AMD Athlon XP
2400+ using the latest bios (8-8-2003) but you must try this by your
own risk.

Upgrade the BIOS:
To download the latest Bios available at PCChips site (030808s.rom)
visit the following page, from this page you can also download the
flash utility:
"M810L(V3.0) Bios" page:
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?DetailID=167&DetailName=BIOS&DetailDesc=M810L(V3.0)&MenuID=35&LanID=0

Regarding on "how to update the Bios" I strongly suggest to visit the
following page, here you will find clear instructions and helpful
advices:
"Milt's PCChips M810L BIOS page":
http://www.freewebs.com/milt/PCChips_M810L_BIOS_Page.htm

The recommended BIOS is the 030103s.rom (it is not the latest one!!):
http://www.freewebs.com/milt/030103s.exe

The recommended Flash utility is aminf329.exe renamed as FLASH.EXE:
http://www.freewebs.com/milt/FLASH.ZIP

Please read carefully the section "Flashing Your BIOS" at the bottom of this page.

Two VERY IMPORTANT notes:
- The Honey X OC BIOS are modified versions of the Official PCChips
BIOS 030103s.rom . If you want to use this BIOS (with additional and
improved features) do it at your own risk and use this one (take a
look to the readme.txt file included to know which .rom file you must
use):
http://www.geocities.com/honeymoon36/m810hlt.zip

- If you use Internet Explorer may be you cannot download any file
from freewebs.com; if you receive a message saying that due security
restriction you cannot download a file from the "Milt's PCChips M810L
BIOS page" you must go to Tools menu --> Internet Options --> Security
tab --> select "Restricted sites" --> Click on the Sites button --> in
the opened box search for the item "*.freewebs.com" under Web Sites
list and remove it from the list --> Accept --> Accept, done.

----------------------------------------------------------

To download the manual of your motherboard:
"M810L(V3.0) Manual page":
http://www.pcchips.com.tw/PCCWeb/Downloads/ProductsDetail_Download.aspx?DetailID=167&DetailName=Manual&DetailDesc=M810L(V3.0)&MenuID=35&LanID=0

------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding how to remove your old CPU:
"How To Upgrade Your Computer A Step-by-Step Guide":
See the 'Processor' section of this document at the 10th page.
http://www.ccm.ac.uk/ltech/cfet/materials/files/file%2024.pdf

--------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding how to install your new CPU see the following document:
"Socket A AMD Processor Installation Guide":
http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/white_papers_and_tech_docs/23986.pdf

-------------------------------------------------------------

Regarding on the configuration of the mother according to the
installed CPU, I am not sure but there is no jumper setting, just do
it from the BIOS setting Utility (see the manual).

-------------------------------------------------------------

I want to add a list of CPUs that people have successfully gotten to
work, note that they may not work for you!!

Duron 1.2GHz (200FSB) - The only stable Morgan Duron for these boards!
Athlon Thunderbird 1.2GHz on Rev 3.0 Motherboard
Athlon Thunderbird 1.333GHz (266FSB)
Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz (200FSB)
Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz (266FSB)
Athlon XP 1900+ on Rev 3.0 Motherboard with Jan 2003 BIOS
Athlon XP2400+ on Rev 3.0 - Some had success with this cpu - strange,
as the Rev 3.0 shouldn't support 266 FSB.

The source for this info is this great page:
"PC Chips M810LMR FAQ page":
http://radel.inet.net.nz/m810lmr.html

Again thank you so much for your understanding and your kindness.

Best regards.

HI LIVIO,

WHEN YOU SAY ATHLON, CAN I USE ATHLON XP?

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 11 Aug 2004 23:54 PDT
What I suggest to you may be is not a good advice, but I think that
you must select the better option. You have two different types of
processors to choice, Duron and Athlon. In my opinion and after
looking at the benchmarks tables the best are the Athlon CPUs.
Here again you have two choices, to follow the official limit of
Athlon 1.4GHz (just Athlon I guess, not Morgan/Palomino) or try with
the unofficial higher limits:
Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz (200FSB)
Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz (266FSB)
Athlon XP 1900+ w/Jan 2003 BIOS (030103.rom or the Honey X OC BIOS)
Athlon XP 2400+ w/latest BIOS or (better as I think) the Honey X OC BIOS.

How to choice?
I lack the knowledge to tell you wich one. My suggestion at this point
is to got the Lottery forum (after register use the NEW TOPIC button):
"The PCChips Lottery BBS - M8xx - Athlon/Duron Boards":
http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142-bin/cgi-bin/ibrd/forums.cgi?forum=5

Here you must register (it is free) and post the following question:
"Which is the better Athlon CPU, BIOS version, and How to configure
the BIOS and motherboard for a PCChips M810LM version 3.0?"
I am sure that you will get a good answer here.

To gain some time I just posted the question in my name, but I suggest
you to do the same.

I hope that this helps you.

Hi Livio,

I have installed a Athlon 2000+ on the system. The computer boots up
ok. Problem is it stopped responding when starting windows 2000. Is
this means the upgrade failed?

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 14 Aug 2004 20:41 PDT
To answer that question I need more details:
- Do you reinstalled successfully Windows 2000
- At which time the boot process is stoped
- Do you receive any error message
- Any additional info is valuable to bring you an answer

Thank you.
