I have just written a fantastic new play, called 'The King & Her'. It takes place in December 1936, the month in which King Edward VIII (of England) ruled after acceeding to the throne in the January. It has five great characters: the King, his Mistress (Mrs Simpson), his Butler, Adolph Hitler and Winston Churchill who meet at Fort Belvedere (the King's favourite residence) to discuss the constitutional crisis. Fortunately, they're all dead so some liberties have been taken. NOW, for the West End & Broadway. So, come along Google Answers and tell me how! Only a potentially viable answer will be acceptable. |

Hello again probonopublico, and thanks for the question. What an interesting play it sounds! Below are some resources which should put you on the road to stardom. (watch out Andrew Lloyd Webber!) Get your play instantly published on the net: the philosophy of playsonthenet.com is that it offers everyone the chance to become involved. There are so many people in the world with talent that never have the opportunity to be seen or heard! http://www.playsonthenet.co.uk/index.cfm?articleid=9 Some good advice from 'aunty' (BBC) In the arena of playwriting, publication does not come without production. Most of the play publishing houses will not in fact accept unsolicited plays at all, much less ones that have not been produced. So your goal should be to send your play to theatres and playwriting contests before you ever worry about publishing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A627716 The Stage http://www.thestage.co.uk/ New York Theatre News http://www.nytheatre.com/ Creators of innovative self-promotional techniques and mailing label lists for professionals working in the performing arts http://www.utdtheatricalservices.com/ We help you connect If your play wins an award, has a production or staged reading, we'll let hundreds of Artistic Directors, Literary Managers and Producers know about it! *requires $35 a year subscription*. http://marketinsight.virtualave.net/ Good list of relevant links: http://www.internetwriter.co.uk/chapters/chap6_screen_trav.htm Good luck with the play! Another opinion (from a fellow theater professional. :) Be wary of playwriting contests that charge a fee, or that promise you access to hundreds of producers. In fact, beware of anything that promises great potential benefit and asks for money up-front. A legitimate contest or marketing tool will not charge more than a minimal ($75 max) 'entry fee', or something similar. There are hundreds of operations that are not quite scams, but that make money taking advantage of too-trusting aspiring artists by promising an easy route to success... There is no such thing. (Yeah, I sound a little bitter, only because I and everyone I know fell for one or another of these early in our careers, and it amounted to time and money we could have spent making real progress.) There certainly are very credible contests that can advance your career if you receive an award, but they're very well known (otherwise how could they be much help?) and have lots and lots of submissions from already reputable writers. It's certainly worth looking into, but a long shot. If you're interested in being a professional playwright, consider getting an agent/manager. That's not easy either... and if anyone in that arena ever asks for money up-front, get up and walk out! Agents are not allowed to make a dime until you do, they only get a percentage of what you make (around 10%.) Managers are not regulated, so there are more bogus ones, but they too should not collect anything until you do (as high as 15%.) Either way, I agree with the notion that mounting the show is your best bet. I don't know where you are or if you know directors in your community, but speaking as an actor who works more every year, promoting and employing yourself is the best, if not only, way to go. Get a director, cast, and find a theater to rent out. Find out how long a run you need in order to get reviewed by the major papers in your area. Make postcards and send them to all the industry types in your market (industry should be admitted free, and have wine and hors d'hovres afterwadrs... it really will get them there.) After you have some good reviews under your belt, put together a press kit with copies of the reviews, stills from the production, and contact info. Use that to shop yourself and the play around to anyone who might be of help, or might know someone who might. Do a little research and find out what other plays have a similar sensibility, who has produced them, and get in touch with those people... The idea is to build a fan base of professionals who can introduce you to other professionals who can get you going. Look into theater festivals like Williamstown, Humana, Edinburgh Fringe, and the like... many, many major productions have come out of such fests (far more than playwriting contests, I suspect.) Last of all, persevere. That's really all it takes. Dogged dedication and time. Yup, it's a LOOOOOT of work. That's why the people who make it are the ones who really, really love the theater :) Good luck!!! |

Another suggestion to get your play performed: 1. Join a playwriting group (some links follow) http://www.askplay.org/links.html A good friend of mine is a serious poet and playwrite who has had a great number of public performances of her work in many venues around the USA. Although she has a minor strong reputation, most of her produced work has been from companies which include actors, writers, directors, and producers that have worked with her at writing groups, workshops, and theater companies that she has been a member of. Although your question did not indicate your geographical location, you can search for local groups or groups nearby where you can get your work "read" and performed in the hope of being discovered. There is no better way to "feel" a work than observe what a director does with it in a reading or staged performance. I'll list a few more links that may be of interest: http://www.fordham.edu/theatre/playwriting.html http://www.theatrebc.org/playcomp/winners01.htm http://www.workingtitleplaywrights.com/about.html www.gorillatheatre.org/GorillaShortTermGoals.pdf Search strategy: playwriting groups Google search reference: ://www.google.com/search?q=%22playwriting+group%22&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&start=0&sa=N seedy |

Hi, Everybody & Many Thanks. Actually, I am published writer with several books in print all over the world. I wrote a play 3 years ago and entered it in a Play Competition. It came 2nd. I've entered the new one in the same Play Competition this year but results will not be announced until September. I live in the UK and am a member of the local Play Writing Group. I have a talented son who is a playwright & a director but, alas, nepotism is dead in this family at least. What is the world coming to? Bryan |

Your description of the play's plot reminds me of the wonderful play, "Copenhagen" which I saw on Broadway a couple of years ago....Fabulous staging, concept, and dialog. The character of Niels Bohr's wife facinated me.... The plot involves three possible scenarios for what occurred when Niels Bohrs met with Richard Heisenberg during WWII (the details of which are unknown in reality)....fabulous!!! It reminded me of the famous joke of Heisenberg being stopped by the police for speeding. The officer asked him if he knew how fast he was going and he answered, "no, but I know where I am"...... http://www.aip.org/history/spring2000/copenhagen.html seedy PS: It sounds like you are doing everything that was suggested by your "official" answer and the comments previously made. Perhaps you should work on the "talented son" a bit more....remind him of duty, honor, and your last will and testament....:-))))) |
