I need a list of all US Cities followed by what county they are in,
followed by the US state they are in. US cities only, please. Also, it
would be great if it were easily exportable to Excel.

Hi nickelplate,

I have located a US government database which has the information you
are looking for and can be downloaded free of charge. However, these
databases are quite large and will need some cleaning up to extract
the relevant data you are looking for.

There are two ways of obtaining the information: 

One database of city names is 25mb (5 mb zipped) and contains
thousands of records that look like this:

113299 AL Autaugaville  ppl  Autauga  322602N 0863917W
Autaugaville               

city: Autaugaville
county: Autauga
state: AL

The rest is geographic information which can be cleaned out. This
database contains all the cities of the US.


Another smaller database contains more irrelevant infomation and each
state is downloaded separately.

The same record as above would look like this:

113299|AL|Autaugaville|ppl|Autauga|01|001|322602N|0863917W|32.43389|-86.65472|||||160|820||Autaugaville

More irrelevant information would be a record like this:

147521|AL|Autaugaville Elementary
School|school|Autauga|01|001|322615N|0863833W|32.4375|-86.6425||||||||Autaugaville


Alternatively, I have an excel sheet with all the cities and states of
the US. Priced accordingly, I could manually enter the counties and
post this worksheet for you to download.

That 25MB archive (5MB zipped) is just what I need! There is no need
to erase the irrelevant info as it may also be needed later in the

The database I mentioned in my clarification can be found at the following site:

Geonames: State and Topical Gazetteer Download Page

Towards the bottom of the page, you will find Topical Gazetteers. In
that category, the database you will want to download is called
Pop_places.zip (4.6 MB).
