Question ID: 385540
I am looking for research that has been conducted asking violent crime
offenders, inmates, if the threat of the death penalty was a
consideration before they committed their crime, in other words have
criminals been asked if the death penalty was or was not a deterrent
to them. I am looking for research, results, and conclusions from that
research; the research has to have been conducted on actual violent
crime offenders and/or inmates. I have already read "America's
Condemned Death Row Inmates in Their Own Words" by Dan Malone and
Howard Swindle. I also have many studies done using crime rates and
other data I want studies done on actual criminals.

Seems a bit one sided - only asking the ones who clearly weren't
deterred from comitting a crime. I suppose some of them may have
stopped short of a more serious crime because of the deterrent effect,
but you are potentially leaving out those who were deterred from
comitting any crime at all.

Inmates give whatever survey response they think will get them out of
jail the most quickly. And much of the existing research is
government funded and usually heavily biased. But best wishes
nonetheless.

btw, PBS had a special about youths on death row, and they interviewed
many murderers. I was struck by how often the crime of rape plays a
role in the murder. Female murderers tend to have murderered a man
who they claim raped them. Many men who committed murder did so to
avenge the rape of their wife, mother, or sister.

I have noticed a trend in GA in the past few months, that of
commenters (not researchers!) passing judgment on questions asked,
implying that the questioner was somehow wrong to ask the question. I
just want to say this: questioners do not have to justify their
queries. Asking a particular question at one time in no way precludes
asking another question at another time. A person wants to know what
a person wants to know. If somebody else thinks another question
ought to be asked instead, let that person ask it.

to ac67-ga: My question is not one sided. I have all other sides to
the debate on deterrence covered and this was one I was hoping was out
there. If you read the question you'll see I stated that I had a lot
of other research from other sources containing other data.

to daytrader76-ga and archae0pteryx-ga: thanks for your comments
