All of the material below between the <html> and </html> tag
constitutes a copy of what's currently being done in Javascript on
your home page. The code is 33% smaller, as unnecessary text and
format tags have been eliminated.
I've coded this, then rechecked it here today and everything appears
good but you'd be surprised how different browsers treat web pages.
Some recommendations and comments:
* I haven't been able to capture the subtle grey tone of your
background (at least not yet) but have tried to replicate the page
accurately. I often use white backgrounds because it's easiest to
work with and provides a great contrast ratio, but the grey that
you're using is soft and easy on the eyes.
* I've put comments on this HTML page so that you have some idea what
each of the sections of code is doing. It should be easy for you to
change things OUTSIDE of the HTML tags, which as you probably know are
defined the carets: < >
For you to check:
* ask as many people should browse the modified page as possible.
You wouldn't believe it but researchers often report a page as
unloadable when others have no problems with it. It's usually due to
a coding error (usually an open HTML statement or 'tag'). I've made
enough changes that anything is possible, though the page looks good
in IE6 to me.
* let me know anything that you don't like, from text size to colors.
All can be modified, though I have to tell you that what two people
with the same browser see is often different (HTML is weird in that it
allows the USER control over many things, such as the font). Front
Page had put much of the text in a SMALL format but I just used
straight HTML links and text may look awkward to you.
* SAVE THE ORIGINAL and each revision of the page (indexa.html,
indexb.html or some such). You never know when something will go awry
that you'd like to recover. And yes, I've even had Compuserve or
other major companies crash a server and had to recover my own files.
* when you repost this file to your website, please rename it as
index.html -- that's what your home page file is known as. But you
probably already know that!
* check ALL of the links. Very important, as one small error means
the Googlebot can't see those important links.
* consider putting an abstract description of 20 words or less for
each link. It will increase the amount of text that the Googlebot
sees, thereby getting your pages linked on more searches.
* the strongest thing that you can do for a search engine is to get
others linking your pages. Reciprocal links (you and Stiglitz; you
and Krugman) score the best.
* take a close look at what's in the meta tags. Though Google
doesn't use them, other search engines do and it's an important way to
deal with classifications for your web page.
* once we're done here, you'll want to re-submit to Google, DMOZ and
major search engines.
If there is anything wrong with the code, please let me know via a
Clarification Request and I'll modify it for you.
Best regards,
Omnivorous-GA
