Dear lazon,

The full German text of George Steiner's speech, as published on 31
May 2003 in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, is available on the
Koblenzer Jugendtheater website.

To find it, please follow these easy steps:

1. Access the site:
http://niemandsland.koblenzerjugendtheater.de/index.html

2. In the menu on the left, click the link "brisant"

3. Scroll slowly down until you find this paragraph:

Wir alle sind Gäste des Lebens und der Wahrheit - George
Steiner
Über die willkürliche Gabe der Existenz, das Wunder des Staates
Israel und den verlorenen Adel des jüdischen Volkes: Dankesrede
von George Steiner aus Anlass der Verleihung des Börne-Preises
mehr...

4. Click the "mehr..." link at the end of that text. This will take
you to the speech text.

Hope this helps!
Scriptor

Excellent, the entire speech is there, I think, just as you say. Now,
I want to have it translated online if that is possible. I will check
with Google first and get back to "question" if I run into a problem.
Thank you very much, Scriptor.

This is an great way to solve gritty little search questions. Scriptor
helped me. Just what I needed when the English version of Steiner's
speech could not be found.

There is a website where you can download his speech (i.e. text, not
audio). However, it is not free of charge (apparently, it would cost
1.50 EUR). The text may be slightly abbreviated. I would like to
refrain from posting the link as long as I do not know if it is the
one Scriptor has in mind.

Steiner's speech as translated by Albert H. Friedlander was published
in European Judaism, A Journal for the New Europe, Vol. 36 · No. 2 ·
2003. However, only "Journal subscribers will be able to view and
download the PDF version".

A follow-up to my earlier comment:

The German text as first published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine
Zeitung can be accessed by going to
www.faz-archiv.de

Having found this article you can either purchase the document (2860
words) or the entire page of this edition of the FAZ.

Friedlander as translator is mentioned on page 2 of the Editorial:
"It is our particular privilege to offer a translation of the lecture given by
George Steiner in Frankfurt in May 2003 on the occasion of receiving the Börne
Prize. Not content with translating it for us, Albert Friedlander graphically
describes the context and gives us extracts from the laudatio by the
German Foreign Minister Joschke Fischer, picking up all the underlying
irony of the event."
