Although still requiring a small amount of knowledge, the best tool
for identifying "mystery clips" is probably GSpot,
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ or
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/gspot.html. When pointed at a file
(or many files) it will identify the used "codec" to the best of its
ability.

(Assuming you're a windows users) Assuming the file is not a RealMedia
(.rm) or other propriatary format file and that when you double-click
it opens in Windows Media Player but complains about an inability to
decode the file you have a DivX file and need to aquire the DivX codec
pack from www.divx.com.

All that being said, don't download movies - go pay in the theatre and
support the people making the things you want to see! Unlike music you
can't even make a questionable argument that the creators are getting
ripped off by the people distributing it. Additionally it's improbable
you're going to watch it, decide you like it and go buy a ticket vs
music where you MIGHT try an MP3 and go buy the album if you don't
delete it.

The easiest way is to forget about Codecs altogether.

What you want to do is get a program that will play the movies for
you, find the correct codec for you, and do it all behind the scenes
without messy installs of other things.

I am referring to VideoLAN available at http://www.videolan.org/vlc

Choose your operating system from that list, download the program and
install. After that you should be ready to watch any movie you have in
any format.

One way is by lookign at the file extsn, Its not always correct, but
you can usually guess which player to use with which movie by looking
at the file extsn.

hi,

Suprnova movie is SVCDs.
SVCDs need a special codec to play.
Use VideoLan.org -> http://www.videolan.org/vlc
It's totally free.

Uses port 6881 to 6889.
