I was recently admitted to the University of Sussex, in the UK, to
study for my M.A. in International Economics. I was hoping to find
out how the school's Economic program ranks and is regarded around the
world. I am a U.S. citezen so I would like to attend a program that
has name recogntion in Europe and the US since I do not know where I
will be seeking work once I graduate. I am not intrested in
undergraduate ranking or the ranking of other graduate programs as
much as the one I have been admitted to. Any information on importnat
and succesful faculty as well as where the majority of graduates are
employed would be helpul.

I would also like to know what I can expect to pay being a non-EU
student, I know what tution is but I want an idea of what they expect
in tution, plus room and board, other spending, its a one year program
so what I could I expect to pay for a whole year, in pounds and
current dollars. Thanks

An information sheet at the University of Bradford states:

The British Council advise that basic living expenses for a American
student living outside London are likely to be between £5150 and £6700
per year. These figures are broken down in detail on their website at
www.britishcouncil.org/eis/costlive.htm
Source: http://www.brighton.ac.uk/audience/internat/countryfacts/USA.pdf

That website has been updated to
http://www.educationuk.org/pls/hot_bc/page_pls_user_advice?b=advice&d=costs#post
which says:
For [undergraduate] living costs, you should budget for a nine-month
academic year. Average living costs (covering accommodation, food,
clothing, entertainment, books and daily travel) for an international
student studying a degree course will be £730 per month in London or
£585 per month elsewhere.
[Graduate living costs are the same, but budget for a 12 month year]

It lists further example costs of living:
The figures suggested are based on the average spending of UK
students per week in a survey carried out by the National Union of
Students. It might also be useful to convert the figures in UK pounds
into your own currency. This way you can make more accurate estimates
of what you personally are likely to spend. Below are some typical
living costs for students in the UK:
- Accommodation or rent: average outside of London is £53.45 per
week; inside London £80.21. See the 'Accommodation' pages for details
of the different levels of costs.
- Bills: average is £32 per week, unless you will be in halls of
residence where they are included.
- 	Food/household shopping: average outside London is £28 per week;
inside London £33.40.
- Clothing: average is £10.80 per week.
- Laundry: average is £8.50 per week.

The International Office at Sussex give example costs at their website at
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/International/admissions/fees.shtml#expenses
It is expected that for the nine months period from October 2004 -
June 2005 you should allow £6,2005 and, for a full year, £8,110.
Actual rents in 2003/4 varied from £54.00 to £74.00 depending on
the type of accommodation. Rent in the private sector is likely to be
more.

I presume you have read the relevant pages from the prospectus:
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Units/publications/pgrad2004/economics.html#4074

1) Research Rating: I found the website http://www.hero.ac.uk/rae with
the results of the Research Assessment Exercise which grades each
department of each university. In particular the page
http://www.hero.ac.uk/rae/rae_dynamic.cfm?myURL=http://195.194.167.103/Results/byuoa/uoa38.htm
lists the results for economics departments.

2) Successful faculty: I don't recognise any of the names, but you can
check them out at here
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Units/publications/pgrad2004/economics.html#faculty

3) Graduate employment: the page
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/cdec/sg_fds_02.html has a link to postgraduate
destinations, but is only available on the sussex campus (for data
protection reasons) if you contact somebody at the CDEC I am sure they
will send you the info that you are after.

Hope this helps (by the way sussex is a great university!)
