Several months ago, the NY Times ran an article about why the middle class do not oppose tax cuts for the very rich. One reason is because the middle class simply can't fathom how rich the rich actually are; also, many in the middle class consider themselves "pre-wealthy". They're just one lotto win/suprise inheritance/lucky break from being rich themselves, and they won't want to pay extra taxes. I'd like a copy of this article, but I've not been able to find it. Help! |

Hello. I believe that you're thinking of "The Triumph of Hope Over Self-Interest" by David Brook, January 12, 2003, New York Times. Here's an excerpt: "... They have always had a sense that great opportunities lie just over the horizon, in the next valley, with the next job or the next big thing. None of us is really poor; we're just pre-rich. Americans read magazines for people more affluent than they are... " See complete article at: http://www.davidhildebrand.org/teaching/courses/brooks.php ---- search strategy: "pre rich" "middle class" "new york times" I hope this is the article that you had in mind. If not please let me know via the "request clarification" feature. Thanks. |
