Hi Dave,

Gene Kelly was the male Hollywood star who danced to the "An American
In Paris" ballet in the 1951 film. The film won the Academy Award as
best picture of 1951, and Kelly was given a special award "in
appreciation of his versatility as actor, singer, director and dancer,
and especially for his brilliant achievements in the art of
choreography on film."

"Kelly's most bravura performance came with An American In Paris. He
created the dances, climaxed by the 17-minute ballet with Leslie Caron
to George Gershwin's music. The number cost $500,000."

"The film ended with a 17-minute ballet sequence, a "summation of Gene
Kelly's work as a film dancer and choreographer, allowing him his full
range of style - classical ballet, modern ballet, Cohanesque hoofing,
tapping, jitterbugging, and sheer athletic expressionism".
