I think it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to clearly differentiate 34,000 mental states using the English language. Perhaps the Tibetan language has finer distinctions. |

The Bhaktivedanta VedaBase Network (http://vedabase.net)lists/defines many Sanskrit words found in the Bhagavad Gita and similar works. I came across this site a while ago looking for the word 'ananda,' which means many things including ecstasy, joy, bliss, etc. There are also many other variations upon the word, which may account for the 34,000 total? http://vedabase.net/a/ananda ?nanda ? ecstasy; ?nanda-nidhim ? the ocean of bliss; ?nanda-mayah? ? naturally so being; ?nanda ? pleasure; ?nanda-m?tram ? simply blissful; ?nanda-m?tre ? the reservoir of all pleasure; ?nanda ? blissful; SB 4.12.18 ?nanda-anubhavah? ? full of transcendental bliss; etc. I agree with pinkfreud, there is evidently a fundamental difference in the languages. kateri |
