I'm looking for a list of web applications that are either commercial
or open source that can store and retrieve images based on queries
(eg. date range, location, person).

How many web applications would you consider to be an acceptable
number of applications for your list?

Thanks!

The top 5 should suffice.
Thanks.

Hi kimchi-ga,

In researching your question, I found the two clear winners. The first
is almost an industry standard, but lacks some of the more
sophisticated search you were looking for. The second one has all the
search function you wanted, and much more... I was however unable to
locate more web photo album software with the sophistication of search
required--other than the LinPHA.

At this time, the question is not 'answered'. If you are happy with
the two applications that I have found for you, and wish for this to
be the final 'answer', please let me know. Otherwise, perhaps some
other researcher will take up the cause and finish my work.

Perhaps the best program available for posting photos online, and
being able to search/organize the information is a program called
"Gallery". You can find it here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=index

Gallery works best with Linux, but will (albeit with some issues) run
on a Windows server with PHP installed.

You can see a demo of the software here:
http://gallery.menalto.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=gallery&file=index&include=albums.php

However, the software is much more powerful than the small little demo
would have you believe.

Gallery is free (as in thought and beer). Truely a marvelous program.

Another program, again written in PHP (and free) is called, "LinPHA".
It has some powerful features, including a better back-end vs. the
current Gallery release. LinPHA uses a SQL database to store
information about the images rather than a flat-field text file
database in Gallery. LinPHA also has a better search function,
allowing you to execute complex queries against the back-end database.
You can find the software here:
http://linpha.sourceforge.net/nuke/index.php

A demo can be found here:
http://linpha.sf.net/demo/linpha/

Thanks!

Hi kimchi-ga,

Thanks so much for allowing me to post the above as an answer. As I
said, the two products I've detailed really are some of the best out
there--and free! I've used Gallery myself for a number of years, and
have continually found it to be the best, most full-featured gallery
software around. However, LinPHA has all the advanced search features
you want. In fact, even the commercial gallery programs I found didn't
have the ability to search EXIF tags: only the free LinPHA did!

Again, thanks so much!

Legolas-ga

Search - mostly via. www.sourceforge.net:
gallery
photo
album

And, of course on Google:
gallery exif
album exif

(exif is a file format that allows JPG's to store information on the
'method' used to capture the image. For example aperature, etc..)
