I?m looking for 10 great sites on interesting, thought-provoking,
exciting stories and news on famous modern and historical people. Not
sites with just quotes though. For example, the story about how Edison
said that he hadn?t failed 999 times, instead he had just eliminated
999 ways that didn?t work. Or Bill Clintons classic run-in with
Lewinsky.

Ananova.com is a good example, but I?m looking for something with a
greater timespan. I want a nice mix of news, anecdotes and historical
events. Entertaining stuff. Being able to search and browse
categorically is a huge plus.

Those sites are, well, entertaining, but a bit obscure and burlesque.

I second daytrader's suggestion of the Daily Rotten. That is
accutually what first came to mind when I read this post. Another good
site by the same people is the Rotten Library
(http://www.rotten.com/library/) which has tons of information on just
about every pop/culture refernce fron B.C. to now.

One way you can learn about personalities and historic connections is
through obituaries, a daily source for interesting biographies. The
website Blog of Death at http://www.blogofdeath.com/ is a good natural
starting point, as they update content daily and have links to dozens
of other similar sites.
Weekly magazines cover personalities and historical perspectives well
and a good family-friendly one is Parade Magazine at
http://www.parade.com/.
