Juwolf43 --

For questions like this, researchers often find association groups and
consultants to be an excellent place to start.

First, there's a non-profit newsletter called Nonprofit Online News
and it's done some things on technology:
"Technology and Profit Management," (Osten, undated)
http://news.gilbert.org/features/featureReader$3842

One such organization is the Center for Excellence in Non-Profits, a
San Jose organization. Though there's not much on their website, one
of their directors, Joni Podolsky, has written a book that focuses on
the issue:
Amazon.com
"Wired for Good," (March, 2003)

Another is N-TEN, which stands for the Non-profit Technology
Enterprise Network, a San Francisco based organization that DOES have
an extensive set of materials online:

A few years ago the San Francisco Opera made a major investment in
supporting the organization with technology -- and in getting the
staff to understand it. There was once an excellent case history on
the University of San Francisco site that's now gone, but the story is
told in a Harvard Business Review case:
Harvard Business Online
"San Francisco Opera," (April 14, 2000)
http://harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu/b02/en/common/item_detail.jhtml?id=300095

Leverus, Inc., a Canadian consulting firm that specializes in
non-profit issues also has a wealth of information, though redesigns
of their website have made it awkward to navigate.

Leverus has done two seminal studies on technology spending by
non-profits. The 2002 survey is much heavier on web spending, noting
that in Canada:
50% spend less than 1% of total budget on the Internet
32% spend 1-3%
  7% spend 4-5%
  6% spend 6-10%
  4% spend more than 10%

Leverus Associates
"Leverus Annual Internet Survey for Associates and Non-profit
Agencies" (April, 2003)

"Leveraging the Net: Association Internet Benchmark Spending"
(December, 2001)

The "Leveraging the Net" bulletin covers a wide range of topics
regarding using the Internet.

And you might also want to see:
Leverys Associates

Tufts Managed Care Institute (TMCI) has a number of documents online,
including several on using technology in the medical environment:
http://www.thci.org/downloads.htm

Here's one from TMCI that discusses types of systems to support
quality care and notes that Modern Healthcare magazine puts overall
hospital spending at 3.5% of revenues"
TMCI
"Quality and Clinical Decision Support Systems" (May-June, 2002)
http://www.thci.org/downloads/ttopic5602.pdf

Finally, if you or a colleague is a member, the ASAE has a collection
of documents on Technology use in associations. However, the pages
are password-protected:
American Society of Association Executives
http://www.asaenet.org/asae/cda/index/1,1584,ETI19542_MEN3_NID3965,00.html

Using any of the following Google search strategies will bring up
hundreds of other potential resources:
"non-profit" + "IT spending"
"arts organizations" + "IT spending"
alliance non-profit technology
"joni podolsky" + technology

Best regards,
