a Life Magazine series of photographs of a family doctor on house
calls.  I believe Eugene Smith was the photographer.  Perhaps the
1950s.  How do I access those photographs

I am sure that what you have in mind is W. Eugene Smith's famous photo
essay "Country Doctor", published in "Life" in September 1948. The
photos of that essay show Dr. Ernest Ceriani, general practitioner in
Kremmling, Colorado, and his work, including several home calls.
