Hello. Royale is a French adjective meaning "royal." ' Royal, royale, royaux and royales are the four forms of the adjective meaning "royal". ' source: French vocabulary - tricks for English speakers part 3 http://www.gbarto.com/languages/frvocab3.html "French Adjective royal m (f royale, m plural royaux, f plural royales) 1. royal " source: Wiktionary http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Royal In short, there's no difference in the meaning of royal and royale. In English-speaking countries, "royale" is occasionally used instead of "royal" in order to add some element of sophistication. Instead of naming a store the "Royal Boutique," the owner might call it "Boutique Royale." Why use a French word instead of an English word? Basically, for the same reason that someone might call their coffee shop a "cafe." In other words, it's just style. There's a difference in pronunciation, of course. The last syllable of royale is usually pronounced in a way that rhymes with "pal." Royal more or less rhymes with "boil." Interestingly, when Ian Fleming's novel "Casino Royale" was published in America, the title was changed to "You Asked For It," reportedly because it was feared that American readers were unfamiliar with the word royale. 'In America James Bond made his first paperback appearance in 1955, two years after his hardcover debut. Popular Library published Casino Royale as a pulp paperback under the title You Asked For It. (Apparently, it was feared that American readers would not be able to pronounce "Royale.")' http://www.commanderbond.net/Public/Stories/1964-1.shtml ----------- search strategy: royal royale adjective pronounce royale I hope this helps. Royale is sometimes used instead of royal where there is a prohibition on using royal because it might imply connection with or endorsement by royalty. Owain |

Juggler-ga says Ian Fleming's book "Casino Royale" had its title changed to "You Asked For It" in the US, because American readers might not have understood what "Royale" meant. Another reason might have been because the US publishers thought it was bad French, since "Casino" is masculine, and "Royale" feminine. |

Ever since I saw "Pulp Fiction," when I encounter the word "Royale," I can't help thinking of a cheeseburger in Paris. |

Hey Pink, Yeah, I also seem to remember Travolta asserting that McDonald's Quarter-Pounder with cheese was called a "Royale" in France. In reality, though, it's called a "Royal Cheese." http://www.mcdonalds.fr/ |

Heck, if you can't learn good French from Ian Fleming or John Travolta, what is the world coming to? :-D |
