Bob Marley - 85 words
=====================

Bob Marley, guitarist and songwriter was born in 1945 in Jamaica and
is widely accepted as Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure.
His career covered every aspect in the rise of Jamaican music from ska
to contemporary reggae. Marley was best-known for his reggae group The
Wailers. In 1980 the Wailers Tour attracted the largest audiences at
that time for any musical act in Europe. Bob Marley died of cancer in
1981 at age 36. In 2001 he was awarded the Grammy?s Lifetime
Achievement Award.

Sources of Information:

?Reggae's most transcendent and iconic figure, Bob Marley was the
first Jamaican artist to achieve international superstardom, in the
process introducing the music of his native island nation to the
far-flung corners of the globe.?

(..)

?Robert Nesta Marley was born February 6, 1945 in rural St. Ann's
Parish, Jamaica; the son of a middle-aged white father and teenaged
black mother, he left home at 14 to pursue a music career in Kingston,
becoming a pupil of local singer and devout Rastafarian Joe Higgs.?

(..)

?The new line-up proceeded to tour the world prior to releasing their
1975 breakthrough album Natty Dread, scoring their first UK Top 40 hit
with the classic "No Woman, No Cry." Sellout shows at the London
Lyceum, where Marley played to racially-mixed crowds, yielded the
superb Live! later that year, and with the success of 1976's Rastaman
Vibration, which hit the Top Ten in the U.S., it became increasingly
clear that his music had carved its own niche within the pop
mainstream.?

(..)

?While jogging in New York's Central Park he collapsed, and it was
discovered he suffered from cancer which had spread to his brain,
lungs and liver. Uprising was the final album released in Marley's
lifetime ? he died May 11, 1981 at age 36.?

?Robert Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 - May 11, 1981), better known
as Bob Marley, was a guitarist and songwriter from the ghettos of
Jamaica.?

(..)

?Born in Nine Miles, St. Ann to a white father, Norval Marley (who
never really knew his son because of white upper classes' disdain for
Norval's affair with Marley's mother), and a black mother, Cedella
Booker, on February 6, 1945, Marley started in ska and gravitated
towards reggae, playing, teaching and singing for a long period in the
1970s and 1980s; Marley is perhaps best-known for work with his reggae
group "The Wailers", the backbone of which were two other celebrated
reggae musicians, Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh.?

(..)

?Marley's work was largely responsible for the mainstream cultural
acceptance of reggae music outside of Jamaica.?

(..)

?In July 1977, Bob Marley injured his foot while playing soccer, and
the injury became cancerous. (..) The cancer spread to his brain and
his lungs. In the summer of 1980, he collapsed during a series of
shows at Madison Square Garden. He sought help, mostly from the
controversial cancer specialist Josef Issels, but it was too late. A
month before his death, he was awarded Jamaica's Order of Merit. He
wanted to spend his final days in Jamaica but he became too ill on the
flight home and had to deplane in Miami. Sadly, he passed away at
Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida on May 11, 1981.?

?Bob Marley was born on February 6th, 1945 in the village of Nine
Miles in St. Anne's Parish, Jamaica. Born of an absent white father,
Bob & mother Cedella Booker moved to Kingston, residing in Trenchtown.
It was in Trenchtown where Bob saw the realities of the world and this
touched him deeply and led him to create music as a healing force. In
the early 60's he formed the Wailers with Peter Tosh & Bunny Wailer
and they would go on to work with such legendary producers as Sir
Coxsonne Dodd of Studio One, Lee "Scratch" Perry and Chris Blackwell
of Island Records.?

?Bob Marley's career stretched back over twenty years. During that
time Marley's growing style encompassed every aspect in the rise of

?His first two tunes, cut as a solo artist, meant nothing in
commercial terms and it wasn't until 1964, as a founding member of a
group called the Wailing Wailers, that Bob first hit the Jamaican
charts.?

(..)

?It's difficult to properly understand Bob Marley's music without
considering Rastafari. His spiritual beliefs are too well known to
necessitate further explanation. It must be stated, however, that
Rastafari is at the very core of the Wailers' music.?

?At the end of the European tour, Bob Marley & The Wailers went to
America. Bob played two shows at Madison Square Garden but,

?Jackie Mittoo is the unsung hero of reggae music. Playing keyboards
professionally from the age of thirteen, he went on to become the
musical director at Clement 'Coxone' Dodd's Studio One label from
1965-69. The music he created there is as seminal a body of work as
Berry Gordy's at Motown or Rudy Van Gelder's at Blue Note, and the
classic rhythms he composed at this time are the foundation of
dancehall reggae and still rock any session.?

?One of his [Jackie Mittoo] best recordings was recorded in 1990, the
year of his death, the wicked 'Wild Jockey' on Lloyd Barnes New York
based Wackies label.?

also very young, about 13, when he started to play with the
Skatalites.?

(..)

?Jackie Mittoo also was a scout for Sir Coxsone Dodd and arranged and
produced most of the tracks recorded in the end of the Sixties (ca.
'65-'68) for Studio One.?

?In 1968 Mittoo emigrated to Canada, where he set up the Stine-Jac
label. He cut several albums for Bunny "Striker" Lee in Jamaica and
London. He also worked on sessions for Sugar Minott's Youth Promotion
outlet.

Jackie died of cancer on December 16, 1990. Before he died he received
credits for one of his early works. Mighty Diamonds' "Pass the
Kutchie" was based on Mittoo's instrumental "Full Up". "Pass the
Kutchie" was later recorded by the Musical Youth as Pass the Dutchie,
bringing them worldwide fame.?

?Jackie Mittoo was a true star of Jamaican music; a founder member of
The Skatalites, a prolific composer and the keyboard powerhouse behind
many a classic tune. His simple, often hypnotic approach, to ska,
rocksteady and reggae made him one of the most distinctive sounding
musicians of the era.?

(..)

?Although Jackie mastered the plethora of synthesizer keyboards that
were changing music in the 1970s, his favourite instrument remained
the workhouse of soulful sound - the Hammond organ.?

(..)

?In his later years Jackie Mittoo relocated to Canada and worked with
other Jamaican ex-pats to expand the reach of reggae music. He was a
regular visitor to London, working with Bunny Lee and Sugar Minnott on
various projects. Towards the end of his life he even joined a
reformed Skatalites. It is, however, in his solo work that his
instrumental genius shines through. Champion In The Arena is a
wonderful collection, a fitting tribute to a singular talent. His
death in 1990 left a void which is still to be filled.?

of a nerve disorder in May 1999.

Sources of Information:

?Not only was Pablo's melodica unique, it would sweep the entire
island's scene and become an integral part of the music of the era.
But Pablo was no one-trick pony, he was also a virtuoso keyboardist
and his playing permeated the island across myriad of his own releases
and as a session man for others. He was equally talented on the other
side of the recording desk and his production work was as inspired as
his playing.?

at Kingston College where Swaby also made the connections that would
help launch him into the music industry. Amongst his classmates was
Clive Chin, whose family ran Randy's, Kingston's premier record
store.?

(..)

1990 ?As the decade deepened, Pablo remained a stalwart of the scene
by producing a number of hit records, including such classics as Dawn
Penn's "Night and Day" and Yami Bolo's sublime "Jah Made Them All"
album.?

King Tubby ? 81 words
=====================

Osbourne Ruddock (King Tubby, Jamaican musician was born on January
28, 1941 and is known above all for his influence on the development
of dub in the 1960s. In the 1970s he had a string of hit songs, and
worked as a producer for Lee Perry, Bunny Lee and Augustus Pablo. By
1985, King Tubby completed his new studio, and produced its first hit,
Anthony Red Rose's ?Temper.? He was shot and killed on Feb 6, 1989 in
St. Andrews, Jamaica.

Sources of Information:

Born: Osbourne Ruddock on Jan 28, 1941 in Kingston, Jamaica
Died: Feb 6, 1989 in St. Andrews, Jamaica

?King Tubby is to this day synonymous with dub. He was a man who had a
passion for fiddling with sound equipment, and turned that passion
into a new musical genre and a veritable art form.?

?King Tubby was born under the more humble name of Osbourne Ruddock in
Kingston, Jamaica, on January 28, 1941.?

?Then, on February 6, 1989, his career came to a sudden end when he
was shot and killed outside his home in Waterhouse. His murder remains
unsolved, his death believed to have been the result of a street
robbery. In the years since, King Tubby's renown has only grown. As
time has passed, even more material has come to light and albums that
saw only limited release are now easily available.?

?Osbourne Ruddock (better known as King Tubby) was born in 1941 in
Kingston, and worked as electronics engineer (repairing radios and
televisions) though out the 1960s. He owned a sound system (called
'Home Town Hi-Fi') by 1968, and used unique echo and reverb effects
which set him aside from the competition. During this time, he also
worked for Duke Reid at Treasure Isle Studio as the master cutter,
cutting acetates(15). These 'one off' disc were designed to gain a
competitive edge over rival sound system operators via their
exclusivity. Ruddock was mixing one of these 'dub' versions when he
accidently left out portions of the vocal track from the recording. On
listening back, he decided he liked the effect of just having the bed
track by itself and played it on his sound system.?

(..)

?There is general agreement that King Tubby's most prodigious period
was during the mid seventies when working with Bunny Lee.?

(..)

?During the early eighties, King Tubby devoted himself to building his
new studio. Completed in 1985, it soon produced its first hit, Anthony
Red Rose's 'Temper'. It looked as if Tubby was to become a leading
producer in Jamaican music, until he was mysteriously gunned down
outside his studio in 1986.?

A Brief History of Dub
http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Meadow/8887/dub/

-----------------------------------------------------------

?Like any discussion of the origins of a particular musical genre, the
history of dub is a mix of legend and fact. Most folks agree, however,
that the most influential force in the evolution of Jamaican dub was a
creative sound engineer named Osbourne Ruddock, aka King Tubby.

King Tubby was born in Kingston in early forties. By the late sixties
Tubby had his own sound system, or studio, Home Town Hi Fi.?

(..)

?King Tubby was an incredible innovator as a sound technician. He is
said to have built his first mixer from scratch. He also designed much
of his own equipment including faders and an echo delay unit fashioned
by running a tape loop over the heads of a two-track tape deck. Most
of his dubs were live mixes.

Tubby trained many disciples who were to become major contributors to
the dub music culture. Prince Philip Smart came to the United States
and founded the HCF reggae studio on Long Island. Lloyd James, aka
King Jammy, started his own label, Imprint, and supplanted Tubby as
the top Jamaican producer in the mid-eighties. Producer and vocalist
"Yabby You" Jackson and Overton "Scientist" Brown were also Tubby
pupils.?

Living Art

-----------------------------------------------------------

?King Tubby (born Osbourne Ruddock, January 28, 1941 - February 6,
1989) is a Jamaican musician, known primarily for his influence on the
development of dub in the 1960s. In the 1950s, King Tubby's musical
career began with the sound systems, set up on the streets of Kingston
and playing dance music for the people.?

(..)

?During the 1970s, Tubby's work in the studio gave rise to modern dub
music. He had a long string of hit songs, and worked as a producer for
some of Jamaica's most popular artists, including Lee Perry, Bunny
Lee, Augustus Pablo and Yabby You. In 1973, he began recording vocals
to put along the instrumentals.?

(..)

?In the 1980s, he focused on production for Anthony Red Rose, Sugar
Minott and other popular musicians. He was shot and killed by unknown
persons, probably in a robbery attempt, in 1989.?

Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Tubby

-----------------------------------------------------------

?King Tubby was born Osborne Ruddock in 1941 in Jamaica and was
initially employed as a builder and repairer of speakers and
amplifiers. Starting in the early '70s, he drew on these skills as he
began mixing instrumental "versions" of popular reggae and rocksteady
records for DJs to chant over in order to keep people on the dance
floor longer (thus the DJ/MC pairing so integral to hip-hop began,
though in a slightly different form). King Tubby made economic
necessity into an art form by taking a relatively simple 4-track
machine and refitting all the faders so that parts of the
instrumentation or the vocal could be dropped out smoothly from the
mix at any given moment. After building echo and reverb units
specially built for this purpose and using them as instruments, "dub"
was born.?

Dennis Emmanuel Brown -
February 1, 1957-July 1, 1999; Age 42
"The Crowned Prince of Reggae"

Known as the "Crowned Prince of Reggae", Dennis has been one of
Jamaica's top vocalists for many years. His career began as a young
teenager with Coxsone Dodd's Studio One Records where he recorded two
albums.

?One of Jamaica's most beloved and prolific artists, the late Dennis
Brown has left behind a slew of classic songs and myriad hits, a rich
musical legacy born of a career that spanned over 30 years. Born
Dennis Emmanuel Brown in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1957, his childhood
home virtually destined him to a future in the music industry.?

(..)

?It didn't take long for the producers to discover his talent and by
the time he was 11, the youngster had a first hit to his name, with a
cover of the Impressions' "No Man Is an Island." It was the beginning
of a successful, but not exclusive, partnership (Brown also scored
with "If I Had the World" for producer Prince Buster). However, Dodd
was responsible for Brown's debut album, 1970's No Man Is an Island,
and its follow-up the next year, If I Follow My Heart.?

(..)

?By 1979, Brown was already a legend, even though he'd barely reached
adulthood. In addition to his work with Holness, he had a virtual
shop's worth of successful singles to his credit: "Man Next Door,"
"Cup of Tea," "Equal Rights," "How Can I Leave," "Funny Feeling" (a
duet with DJ Trinity), and many more. And the hits just kept coming.?

(..)

?Perhaps it was to maintain this output that Brown first started using
cocaine. Addiction eventually followed, and with it inevitable bodily
ravages. Still, few expected it to end in his death. But on July 1,
1999, the unconscious singer was rushed to a Kingston hospital with a
collapsed lung. This is not usually a fatal condition, but Brown was
so weakened from drug use that he expired on the table.?

?Dennis Emmanuel Brown was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1957. "He was
dubbed "the Crown Prince of Reggae? and only his natural diffidence
stood between him and even greater stardom" (London Times, 1999).
Dennis acquired this title in the 1980?s around the time when Bob
Marley passed away.?

?Brown is loved like no other reggae musician. He has made beautiful
music for three decades and his career is seen as one of the most
colorful ever in reggae. He has produced more reggae classics than
just about anyone else.?

?Dennis Brown was perhaps one of the most productive and influential
reggae musicians ever.?

Hi bobbie7-ga,

Thank you for your answer. Reggae is my favourite music and I must
admit I did spot a couple of slight inaccuracies but generally it was
perfect.

Hi bobbie7-ga,
I would like something like the UFO question done for the planet Mars.
I want to cover 6 different popular/sensationalistic aspects. Below
are some suggestions:

1. general introduction/defintion
2. how Mars has been viewed through history
3. how Mars has been depicted in Sci-Fi
4. discussion of life on Mars
5. exploring Mars, including the current space probe
6. speculation about creating settlements on Mars

Each aspect/section would consist of a 60-80 word summary as with
other questions I have submitted.

Let me know whether you are interested in doing this question. If this
goes well, I'd like something similar done on robots and future space
travel.

Dear Leon,

I?m sorry to say that I won?t be able to work on your project as I
cannot prepare the summaries the way they deserve to done.

Sincerely,
