Dear wichitashocker-ga;
Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question. To have been such a recent artist Enrique Riverón and his
works tend to be a bit elusive. However, I have been able to find a
significant amount of meaningful information about him in terms of his
life, work and professional history:
??.
Are there any books, magazine articles, or other scholarship available
that I might read to learn more about his life, influences, and his
impact on the art world?
The most compelling information will definitely come from the
Smithsonian where his daughter has retired his personal papers and
some of his work. You can find out a great deal of additional
information from a personal perspective about the artist from the
Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution where the Enrique
Riverón (1918-1994) papers are stored and have been dedicated to
public use for research, study, and scholarship. Related materials
also include ?Letters to Mario Carreño, 1981-1990, in which Riverón
writes of their mutual friends, his memories of Cuba, health issues,
politics, pricing paintings, collages, and his longings for Paris and
New York.?

??.
Are there any museums that have his works as part of their permanent collection?
The Smithsonian claims permanent ownership of the materials mentioned
above (including some art works) and catalogs them in this manner:
Series 1: Biographical Material, ca. 1929-1960 (box 1, 2 folders)
Series 2: Correspondence, 1918-1991 (box 1, 0.6 ft.)
Series 3: Writings, 1923-1980s, n.d. (box 1, 0.2 ft.)
Series 4: Scrapbooks, 1920s-1990s, n.d. (boxes 1, 3, and 4, 0.7 ft.)
Series 5: Artwork, 1958-1983, n.d. (boxes 1 and 5, 0.4 ft.)
Series 6: Printed Material, ca. 1930-1992 (boxes 2 and 5, 0.7 ft.)
Series 7: Photographs, 1918-1992, n.d. (boxes 2, 5 and 6, 0.6 ft.)
Series 8: Miscellany, 1927-1989, n.d. (box 6, 7 folders)
Some of these materials can actually be seen and examined in an online
virtual museum here. You can read about the artist?s thoughts in his
own words through his letters:

At least one of Riverón?s works, ?Persistent Forms? (1947), is part of
the Emprise Bank Collection, in Wichita, Kansas and is not on
permanent display, but you can view it here:

??.
Can you give any idea of the value of what a large painting (around
12' x 6') by Enrique Riveron - painted in the mid to late 50's might
be worth on the market today? Can you suggest how I might going about
finding a reputable art dealer, etc to value such a work?
I cannot provide you with a potential value of such a painting but in
answer to your follow-up question I know who probably can.
Commercially, appraisers don?t seem to be specializing in this
artist?s work but this may be because of the rarity of the art in
terms of numbers or because collectors don?t normally place them up
for sale and there just aren?t that many that ever make it to the
market. ARTPRICE.COM lists two of Enrique Riverón?s paintings (both
current as of 23 May 1997, which appears to be the last known sale
provided by this source):
Essential Strokes c.1961 127.0x101.6 Oil/canvas
Composition in Yellow and Red c.1960 101.6x127.0 Oil/canvas
The site requires a nominal subscription fee to access biographical
information, histories and historical sale prices but it seems to be
well worth it. Once you are signed in you will have access to the
information you are seeking, with regard to these particular paintings
at least. This source will undoutedly be able to point you toward a
more personal professional source for a potential apprasial:

You are right. I apologize. I guess I became so involved in the
treasure chest I found that I neglected to realize you had already
discovered it. Perhaps these will add significantly to what I have
already offered:
Greene Gallery/Barbara Greene also had a collection that she will show
by appointment. I?m not certain how many Riverón works she has but she
apparently has at least one because he is mentioned in her showcase:

Among other things, this book discusses the period that Riverón worked
for Walt Disney in the productions of ?Snow White? and ?Ferdinand the

Another source of information also comes from the Smithsonian but not
where one would suspect. It is found in the papers of Giulio V. Blanc
in the form of a magazine interview with Riverón:
?Another prominent artist whom Blanc interviewed was Enrique Riverón
(b. 1901) leader of the Cuban vanguardia. He was a member of El Grupo
de Montparnasse, a talented group of painters and writers living in
the southern district of Paris in the late 1920s, an area noted for
its boisterous after-hour activities. The interview was published in
the Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts in 1997.? [I found that
it actually appeared in a volume 22/1996 issue though]

The magazine. ?Journal of Decorative and Propaganda Arts?, is now
published by The Wolfsonian-Florida International University, Miami
Beach, Florida. You very well may be able to contact them to obtain a
copy of the interview as published in that particular issue:

I also found a periodical published by the Wolfsonian in ?Bohemia?
upon which Riverón designed a cover. I don?t know if there is much
information about the artist in the magazine but it can be found here:

As I mentioned, Enrique Riverón appears to be somewhat of an elusive
character in spite of his relatively recent notoriety. It has been
extremely difficult to find a great deal of additional information
about him but my hope is that some (if not all) of these sources can
provide you with new a more informed direction to the information you
are seeking.
