I have installed XP Pro and no sound.
I have installed the P4PE-X soundmax drivers and no sound.  
Device manager says ! at Multimedia Audio Controller.
Sometimes it tries to install Rrealtek, sometimes soundmax.
Always ends in 'There was an error during installing -- Data is invalid.'
Trying to load, after reboot, it says, DSndUp Error -- No ATI Codec
driver was loaded.
Now it wants smwdm.dll -- that is nowhere on my computer or CDs.
Help me get my sound. Called ASUS -- tey said reinstall Windows fresh
but this IS a fresh install.
Called vendor who sold me the computer at computer show and they said
get newest drivers, but I did that already off the internet.

You probably already have it, but here's the ASUS link for the sound
card driver for Windows:

You'll find a couple of copies of "smwdm.sys" in there.
