When I boot up my computer and Windows loads, both my CD-ROMs do not
show up in the My Computer box. When I re-intall them I get a message
saying that the drivers are there but the hardware isn't. I know that
they are plugged in and I've unplugged all the cables from my
motherboard and my hard drive as well. It still persists on not
showing up. I can open and close them manually but cannot do so
because Windows is not recongizing them. A friend told me that it was
a virus and that to run Norton. I did and nothing came up. I ran
AdAware and SpyBot and nothing is there. I've tried to restore my
computer back a week before the problem and it will not do so. I don't
know if I have a virus or faulty cables. Thank you.

CD-ROM drives are cheap enough. You might be happy just upgrading to a
CD-R for $39 instead of fighting with an existing drive.

I have a CD-RW and a DVD-RW. I like them and I will not part with
them. I just got a new computer almost two months ago. I was wondering
if it was the cables, I am thinking about trying different ones, or
what. Thanks again.

Go into device manager and REMOVE your primary and secondary IDE
controllers. It will not break windows. When you PC reboots it will
reinstall them correctly. If that does not work and you made recent
hardware changes.

Try this :

Check that you have your jumper set correctly, One device is Master,
One device is Slave. And go into your BIOS when your PC is booting and
confirm you do not have any of your IDE channels disabled.

Good luck.

Ah, that fixed it! Thank you so much. I was ready to wipe my comp and
re-install everything. I had 4 different IDE channels and the top two
were disabled. I enabled them, booted up and they work. Thanks for
saving me from hours of work. Next time that happens I will know what
to do. Thanks again.
