I need to get an IBM thinkpad 600e (300mb, 20gb )with a fresh install
of Windows 98 4.10 1998 working with a Linksys wirelss G (model wpc54g) card.
The problem may be an irq conflict but I do not know how to tell for
sure, or how to fix if that's the problem. The thinkpad has a Texas
Instruements PCI 1251 cardbus controller for which I have downloaded
special drivers from linksys. I also have a 3com megahertz 10/100
cardbus which works and I would like to continue with as a backup to
the wireless net.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled several times, no dice.
Lots of info in device manager and system but not sure which you need:
Problem device:
Infared port (I do not plan to ever use this)
device probelem code 28
Wireless G Notebook adaptor
code=19 (0xA)
irq 11 mask xDEF8\nscirda.sys 5/11/98 (lots of other stuff on 11; not
sure if a problem, interupts 0-15 seem to be being used, how do I tell
it to use a different one?).
lsbmnds.sys 2/21/2003
All "windowws update" have been run
NAV signatures up to date and system is clean
The router is a linksys Wireless G and works fine with other PCs on my
net. I do NOT need help with this part, once the card is working I
can handle. (pretty sure anyway).
I am a "software guy" and know how to read. A really good "from
scratch" tutorial on IRQ resolution would help. There are too many on
the web to know which are "good and complete" and which are BS.
One more thing: It's a clean install of 98 but I don't have the cd
and anyway no cd drive. I have a floppy but have been using the
megahertz to get files onto the machine. Is there someplace I can get
the win 98 cd? It's a legit copy but bought from brother-in-law's old
company now defunct.
Please let me know which info you need.
Thanks for your help. |

1. IBM normally puts the Windows OS files on the hard drive as CABs.
Try Windows\Options\Cabs
2. You should have a button to disable IR in the Control Panel. (I
have a Thinkpad with Linksys wireless and it's disabled.) You may
also have a "Thinkpad Configuration" in the Control Panel that allows
control of IR and other functions.
3. Once this is done, it's an issue of getting the wireless card set
up properly with the router. This will depend on the level of
encryption chosen at the router and may require some adjustments to
router setup. That's the time to call Linksys, who in my experience
have always been very helpful, even recently when setting up a Dell
portable (which had 802.11g pre-installed).
Does any of this help?

1. Yes I found the cabs in this location. Thank you.
2. I have the configurator and turned off the IR (presume you mean
infrared not something having to do with IRQ). Yes of course rebooted
and all that.
3. Still have the same device conflict.
As stated, once this piece of hardware is working, the router
configuration is not a problem. I know it's not working because I get
a message telling me so upon restart, and because it's status is
"inactive" when I run the utility, NOT because it won't connect to the
wireless router, which is the easy part.
The Infrared was not on IRQ 11, but I understand removing it may have
caused the "installation IRQ optimizer/chooser," for lack of a more
intelligent term, to choose a different location for the linksys upon
install, so of course I uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch--same
problem. Yes many reboots at each step.
Here is what's currently on IRQ 11 in order listed in DM:
11 Wireless G Notebook adaptor
11 Netmagic magicmedia 256av (what's this, do I need?)
11 Intel 82371ab/eb pci to usb universal host controller
11 Chrystal Soundfusion
11 Texas instruments pci-1251 cardbus controller
11 Texas instruments pci-1251 cardbus controller
11 IRQ holder for PCI steering (which leads me to believe IRQs SHOULD be OK)
11 IRQ holder for PCI steering
11 IRQ holder for PCI steering
I have tried removing the third item but the machine insists on
bringing it back upon reboot.

The only other logical suggestion that I'd have is to call Linksys, as
they may have run into this specific device issue before:
800-326-7114 (both U.S. and Canada)
e-mail: support@linsys.com
Web: http://support.linksys.com

1. Turn your machine on.
2. When the Thinkpad splash screen emerges, hit F1 to take you to BIOS setup.
3. Choose Configuration/Advanced Setup/Infrared. Disable the port.
4. DON'T FORGET TO SAVE THE NEW BIOS SETTING.
If that doesn't work, you may find this IBM utility useful:
http://www.physiol.usyd.edu.au/daved/linux/tp600e.html
If none of this works, IBM Thinkpad support would be a good place to
ask about disabling the IR too.

Thanks for your help:
Neither F1 not INS nor anything at this URL takes me into the bios
http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/setup.htm but infrared does seem to
have been removed using the configurator.
I had already spoken to linksys. They were very nice and wanted to
help but told me this is a hardware config issue and I should call
IBM. Good luck getting anything from IBM. Just perfoming a bios
upgrade requires massive downloads for which I haven't the patience,
even with broadband.
How do I find out which bios I currently have? How do I find out
which of the apparantly many 600e submodels I have? Doesn't say on
the bottom, in the installed help, in system information or in my
computer info--nor even when I boot the machine. I even got desparate
and dialed the 800 phone number in "IBM Support" pre-installed. I got
a baffled AT&T operator! Haha.
The utility you mention doesn't seem worthwhile just to turn the
infrared off, when I'm pretty sure it already is, and it's not the
problem.
Feel free to straighten me out if I'm being ornery, but this should
be a hell of a lot easier.

> Neither F1 not INS nor anything at this URL takes me into the bios<
The F1 key is what gets you into the BIOS after the machine is turned
on. Please re-read the instruction steps above carefully, as I've
replicated them on my Thinkpad. It is entirely possible that you have
a different BIOS version (mine is a Phoenix Technologies BIOS) but F1
ALWAYS takes you to the BIOS from the initial splash screen of a PC.
Again, F1 has NOTHING to do with a web browser. It is taking you to
the machine hardware even before the Operating System is loaded.

I know the difference between a web browser and a computer's bios.
Different makes, and submakes from the same manufacturer, including
IBM use different keys to get there, f1 perhaps the most common but
not universal. My HP pavillion zt3000, a truly GREAT computer, uses
f10 for instance. This URL discusses different ways of getting there
for different IBM models and others;
http://members.cox.net/joemurphy/setup.htm
But that's not the point. I appreciate your trying to help me but I
plan to withdraw the question soon. This doesn't sound promising
Thanks for your help.
