I'm looking for papers, articles, etc. which quantify the benefit in
terms of risk and performance in breaking a project development into
segments (eg an evolutionary development or spiral lifecycle) -
together with any evidence it works.

I guess that software is likely to be best covered, but I'm also
interested in other types of development (eg engineering project).
