Dear bev357-ga;
Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.
?Shorea?, commonly called MAYAPIS (scientific name ?shorea palosapis?,
?shorea squamata?) and ALOMON (?shorea almon?) among other species,
comes primarily from the Philippines. A pale version of the wood is
sometimes marketed as ?White Lauan? and a darker version is marketed
as ?Red Lauan?, often sold as Philippine mahogany.

Mayapis trees are considered endangered:
?There are 12 species of trees and other plants, among them orchids
and ferns, which are internationally rated as threatened. The
rainforest is a Dipterocarp - forest in which endangered species like
Lawaan, Yakal, Mayapis and others grow.?

Here is a list of wood producing plant species that this source claims
should be avoided in the interest of conservation of the rain forests.
Varieties of Mayapis (Lauan) are indeed listed among them.

According to this source, Home Depot has even been pressured to remove
Lauan timber and other ?old growth? woods harvested from threatened
areas from its inventory:

In short, if you?d like to refrain from contributing to the
deforestation issue, this may very well be a good place for you to
start.
I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
