I am looking for information on the number of claims adjusters
employed by large insurance companies such as State Farm and Allstate.
I need information on the number of field agents that are appraising
and adjusting claims. If the number can only be found for one of the
above, that is fine. Thanks. |

this information is helpful, but not sufficient. If you can find more
stuff like this that can help piece together an answer, that would be
fine. Other big companies in this area are Farm Bureau Insurance,
Progressive Insurance, Hartford, etc. Thanks.

Here's another:
http://phoenix.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2004/03/29/daily21.html
"Progressive further endeared itself to drivers by mobilizing an army
of 12,000 claims adjusters who sped straight to an accident scene --
and often cut a check right on the spot," BusinessWeek wrote.
How many stats like these would make for a sufficient answer? Let us know.

Not much else is turning up on specific companies, but I thought the
following might at least be of interest to you:
==========
From the Florida Assoc. of Insurance Agents
http://www.faia.com/consumer/catnet/cat.pdf
Agency Catastrophe Guide
Andrew generated a total of more than 725,000 claims in Florida. Of
those, 66% were homeowners claims, 25% were automobile claims, and the
remainder were miscellaneous commercial and general liability claims.
Insurers dispatched 17,400 claims adjusters (25% of the adjusters in
the country) to South Florida.
==========
From the US Bureau of Labor Statistics:
http://www.stats.bls.gov/oco/pdf/ocos125.pdf
Claims Adjusters, Appraisers,
Examiners, and Investigators
Employment
Adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators held about
241,000 jobs in 2002. Of these, more than 14,000 were jobs held
by auto damage insurance appraisers. Insurance carriers employed
nearly 60 percent of claims adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and
investigators; more than 20 percent were employed by insurance
agencies and brokerages, and private claims adjusting companies.
Around 2 percent of adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators
were self-employed.
==========
Hope that helps.

That is somewhat helpful. It seems the information I am looking for
is not easily available. Let's try another approach - can you find
anything on the total number of claims by type (e.g. auto, homes,
commercial property, etc.) for a year? I will increase the amount of
payment to reflect the modified search. Thanks.

aaskcg --
I have found information on the number of claims adjusters employed by
one mid-sized insurance company (about $1 billion in premium
revenues).
Grange Insurance Company employs approximately 600 claims adjusters,
per this consultant's case study on the training of such employees:
Bersin & Associates: Case Study: Grange Insurance
http://corporate.learn.com/files/pdf/GrangeCaseStudy.pdf
And here is a link to a copy of Grange's 2003 Annual Report, which
includes comprehensive financial information about the company.
Grange Insurance: Annual Report
http://www.grangeinsurance.com/annual_reports/2003/report/2003Report.asp?action=Cover
Do you think it would be feasible for you to use this limited
information to extrapolate the kind of industry information you are
interested in? In other words, if a company with $1 billion in
casualty insurance premium revenue employs 600 claims adjusters, are
you willing to assume that a company with $X billion in casualty
insurance premium revenue employs in the neighborhood of "X times 600"
claims adjusters?
If this sort of information would be useful to you, a researcher might
be able to provide a casualty insurance premium revenue number for
selected large companies or for the industry as a whole.

If you had similar information for a couple of the larger companies, I
would be comfortable extrapolating, but I would not be comfortable
extrapolating off of just one mid-size company's numbers. Thanks.

aaskcg --
Would an authoritative government estimate of the total number of
claims adjusters employed by insurance carriers be of use to you, or
are you only interested in their employment by the large carriers?

I am interested in the numbers by carrier. I have seen the BLS stats
http://www.stats.bls.gov/oco/pdf/ocos125.pdf and they are useful from
the standpoint of the total size, however, they do not provide the
information I need. If you are aware of a government sources that
breaks the total number down by carrier, that would be awesome. If
that is not possible, I would also be intersted in government stats
that break it down by type (eg. auto, property, etc.). Thanks.
